Help us celebrate 41 years of Black Excellence at SJSU! BLOC Who are we? The SJSU Black Leadership and Opportunity Center (The BLOC) serves to holistically empower, uplift, and develop all students in the African Diaspora through strengthening and building community bonds, encouraging a positive Black identity, and providing social and academic support. Why are we raising the money? Since 1982, Black Spartans at San Jose State University have been instrumental in ensuring that there is space and opportunity for Black/African American students to be recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments. Each year in May we honor our Black undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees for that calendar year. This year we are celebrating 41 years of Black Excellence at SJSU during the 41st Annual Black Graduation Celebration. This amazing occasion offers a chance for friends, family, and loved ones to gather and celebrate all of their student's accomplishments while creating a culturally immersive experience. How can you help? We need your help in making the 41st Annual Black Graduation Ceremony a celebration to remember, this is a movement towards supporting Black lives; not a moment. Help the Performance Aircraft Project construct their RC plane. Performance Aircraft Project Who are we? The Performance Aircraft Project was initiated as a senior project by a group of six students of diverse backgrounds in the field of aerospace engineering to demonstrate our ability to design, build, and test RC planes. It started from our curiosity to build the fastest RC plane imaginable but later strayed off to focus on multiple performance criteria. It was not long until the scope of our vision became vastly limited by our own resources. Our planes are a fully carbon fiber composite construction and 100% handbuilt by us. Currently, Project Javelin is the preliminary design configuration of the performance aircraft whose main purpose is to attain high speed and maneuverability–similar to that of a fighter jet. The exciting yet challenging topic of this project allows students to explore numerous possibilities through critical problem-solving. While the project is still in its preliminary development stages, we cannot begin to describe how much we have learned in the past few months. That’s why our ambition is to expand and carry on our knowledge and lessons learned to benefit students, engineers, and even hobbyists in the near future. Our goal from the crowdfunding process is to expand our production capabilities so that our project can achieve an even higher level of technical excellence. Why are we raising the money? The design and development of RC aircraft brings countless associated costs, especially considering the advanced technical scope of our project. The raw materials used in the construction of the aircraft, tools required for assembly, and internal electronic components all quickly stack up to an amount that is difficult to pay for on our own. All donations would go directly toward the acquisition of parts required to manufacture fully functional RC planes. Additionally, the preliminary design of a second plane has already begun. The manufacturing of this aircraft in addition to any potential future ones entails the purchase of additional carbon fiber, wood, and plastic for structural design as well as the purchase of additional sets of all required electronic components. Should this become an ongoing project, donations will become essential to fund the growing costs. How can you help? With all of our effort being focused on the continuation of this project, reaching out for help and raising the necessary funds has been difficult. Any amount of support that you could provide would go a long way in aiding us with the development of current and future aircraft. We appreciate your consideration and ask that you spread the word.

The Timpany Center The Timpany Center is a non-profit educational and therapeutic facility that serves community members through a partnership between San José State University Research Foundation (SJSURF) and Santa Clara County. Originally dedicated in 1979 in the memory of Dr. C Russell Timpany, County Superintendent of Schools, the center was designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Today, the center continues the vision of Dr. Timpany with a mission to provide, through multi-agency involvement and San José State University student service learning, inclusive aquatic and land-based activities that target the promotion of physical health and wellness in individuals with disabilities, obesity, and/or advanced age from the greater Santa Clara County community. With the construction completed, we are making every effort to extend the life of the new pool, this means the elimination of all metals and materials that could deteriorate the tile, plaster, and water chemistry. Your support in this campaign will allow us to purchase specialized water wheelchairs and walkers, new pool fitness equipment and other locker room amenities such as scales and bathing suit dryers, new shower curtains etc. Please make a gift today by selecting on of the giving levels and helping us get one step closer to our goal!

Moss Landing Marine Labs (MLML), part of the College of Science at SJSU, is dedicated to preparing our marine scientists of the future. For over 50 years, Moss Landing Marine Labs has been known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. This means undergraduate and graduate students receive 1:1 training and access to faculty advisors and teachers at the frontiers of marine sciences while immersed in hands-on research in the Monterey Submarine Canyon, the Elkhorn Slough, and marine habitats throughout the world. Why are we raising the money?The 2023 Moss Landing Marine Labs annual Open House goal is to raise $20,000 through an online crowdfunding campaign for student scholarships, maintenance/acquisition of marine research equipment used for educational programming, and funding to cover the costs associated with student research expenses.We would like to use this crowdfunding campaign as an opportunity to allow supporters who can not attend the in-person MLML annual Open House fundraising event the opportunity to support our students. How can you help?Funding student scholarships will enable our marine pioneers in need to continue performing their critical marine research. The goal is to provide $10,000 in scholarships for MLML undergraduate/graduate students in need.Doing research-based science is expensive whether it is going on a boat, diving, or acquiring specimens, or performing any field or lab driven study. Student research in the marine sciences frequently involves last-minute unexpected costs and your support will make an enormous difference to their path of success. Help OMLESCA students complete their senior design project with Benchmark Space Systems! OMLESCA Who are we? Our group consists of six students from SJSU pursuing Bachelor's degrees in Aerospace Engineering, working on our senior design project. This project allows us to work directly with Benchmark Space Systems to design the fuel system for one of their small satellites that uses a “green” alternative fuel. This project will allow the students to learn leadership roles, design, propulsion, and structure disciplines to better prepare for the space industry. The goal of this project is to improve traditional methods of fuel delivery with the adaptation for use with the “green” fuel and reduction of overall size to reduce the overall launch cost. By doing this, we are confident that space travel will continue to evolve towards cleaner solutions of propulsion systems for satellites.With the development of this fuel system, we would like to have it contribute to the overall goal of creating a fully functional satellite production lab at SJSU. We hope to have a multi-subsystem project inside this lab for students to be able to get hands-on experience with satellite design, assembly, and testing with all of today’s industry standards. Our first-year fuel system will help lay down the foundation that will allow future students to improve its design and work towards a flight-ready satellite. In addition to creating a platform for educational hands-on experience with satellites, our project also aligns with SJSU’s policy of sustainability to better the environment by using fuel systems with “green” propellants that have zero emissions. Why are we raising the money? In order to bring our project to life, we will need to raise money for different aspects of the project. First, there needs to be funding for the parts and materials that will be used for the physical build of the project. This includes, but not limited to, different metals that have specific qualities, O-Rings, screws, metal tubing, and electronics. Some parts will need to be manufactured, this is where the majority of the funding will go. We also plan to fly to Benchmarks Vermont facility to conduct proof testing on the tank design to ensure its safety and reliability. Once a proof test is conducted a second-generation tank will be manufactured so we can conduct a fluid test and eventually integrate with Benchmark Space Systems 1N Thruster and conduct a static fire test. How can you help? We can use all the help we can get. With your donation, we will be able to complete our mission and help lay the foundation for the next generation of SJSU engineers. SJSU Reseach & Innovation Who are we?The SpartUp Incubator serves as a hub for all SJSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are interested in learning about how to get their business started. From ideation to commercialization, SJSU’s SpartUp programs, including our Proof of Concept (Prototype) Fund, helps to educate, train, network and ultimately commercialize a product, service, or social-enterprise developed by Spartaneurs. “Spartup has helped me gain valuable knowledge about key startup basics, everything from when I should consider incorporating my business, the importance of feedback loops with prospective clients, and when to consider seeking funding and from where.” Why are we raising the money?Since our launch in September, we have found that our Spartaneurs have amazing ideas but are underserved in terms of access to the basic funding required to help them develop them and bring them into reality. “In order for my startup to move forward I need to be able to demonstrate how it will serve my target market, and for this I need to develop a prototype. An award from the SJSU’s Proof of Concept Funding will help ensure I can progress and continue to develop and drive interest in my product.”How can you help?With your contribution to the SpartUp Incubator’s Proof of Concept Fund, we will be able to directly support our Sparteneurs with funds that can apply for funding to develop working prototypes of their ideas which will bring them closer to launching their businesses. Help AkbayanSJSU fund this year's Pilipino Cultural Night! akbayansjsu Akbayan SJSU is the nonprofit student-run Pilipinx American organization on campus. In the Filipino language, Akbayan means “Embracing in Friendship.” For over 42 years, our organization has developed different programs and events under our four pillars of academics, social, community and political, and cultural. Because of our professional and organized execution of events and programs, Akbayan is one of the largest organizations on campus with over 650 active general members. In addition to facilitating a safe and welcoming space for a diverse population, we continuously give back to the Pilipinx American community. As a student organization, we’ve developed a mentorship program that aims to pair members with other students as mentors to ensure success and a high retention rate in our demographic. As a cultural and social organization, we educate our members through workshops specializing in the arts as well as our history. Our organization’s true purpose is to encourage students to “embrace in friendship” while facing the struggles of academia, mental health, and cultural identity. Why are we raising the money? The Pilipinx Cultural Night (PCN) is a program that has been a tradition for many Pilipinx American organizations throughout the United States. For SJSU, this is our 35th anniversary. For two nights and one matinee show, PCN will showcase its members through the expressive arts, including but not limited to cultural, contemporary, and modern dances; band & choir; acting & scriptwriting; in addition to the aspects that are the backbone of our production that operate behind the scenes like programs, attires, tech & props. We expose our members to opportunities in marketing, public relations, graphic design, and financial planning. This is only our second production back with in-person rehearsals aimed for two nights and one matinee fully in-person premier since our production of PCN 32: Morena back in 2020. How can you help? As the success of our student-run production rises, we require more funding to contribute to the growing production and attraction for the many years to come for our Pilipinx Cultural Nights. This year, our venue has been secured at the Santa Clara Convention Center and we have a cast of roughly 100 members. All the proceeds made through this program go directly towards the organization to continue a legacy of giving back to our community and sharing the voices of our youths and ancestors.

Help send DBF at SJSU to this year's competition. Design Build Fly SJSU Our team will represent San Jose State University in the upcoming AIAA 2023 Design, Build, Fly (DBF) Competition. This year’s DBF competition requires teams to design, build, and test aircraft to execute four electronic warfare missions that test performance, payload capacity, aircraft stability, and structural integrity. Design Build Fly is an annual competition held by The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for universities around the world to apply their knowledge outside of the classroom. Every year 110 universities are selected after proposal submission to compete in the fly-off in Tucson, Arizona. This year, the team consists of eleven San Jose Senior State University Aerospace Engineering students. Each member has their respective role responsibilities, including controls, body construction, and wing design. We have secured a position in the competition at fly-off and will do our best to win. The team is raising funds to help pay for tools, parts, and travel to the competition. Like any project worked on, we must consider all costs. The primary necessities for the team are parts. Examples include construction materials (Carbon fiber, Monokote, Balsa wood, Foam) and electronic components. By the beginning of next semester, the team has a goal to complete the prototype construction. This is a significant but important goal to be on track in creating the best airplane possible. The team has been working non-stop to begin a preliminary design that allows redefining the design using our knowledge as engineers. A second critical goal includes raising funds to get the team to the competition and lodging in Tucson, Arizona in the month of April. We need all the support we can get to make this project successful. Since we are representing our university to the best of our abilities, a crowdfunding campaign would be an excellent way to leverage support for greater reach and exposure. Help support Machine Learning at SJSU during this year's Day of giving. Machine Learning Who are we? ML@SJSU is a community of machine learning enthusiasts who build collaborative projects tackling diverse, interesting problems. We host machine learning workshops, reading groups, and guest speakers. Through projects, our members get hands-on training. We focus on career development by conducting resume workshops, mock interviews, and networking events. Outside of SJSU, we run workshops and enrichment for local San Jose high school students, to kindle their interest in the field. Why are we raising the money? Machine learning projects can require computational resources that go beyond what most students have access to. In particular, dedicated GPUs are widely used in the field, but they are cost prohibitive. The club wants to provide members with access to such resources so that they can work on the projects they are most interested in, without being limited by the devices they use. A key focus of the club is making the field more accessible to people from all backgrounds and experience levels. We have partnered with high schools to do workshop series in the past, and are partnering with The Foundation for Hispanic Education to offer enrichment in the Spring. This initiative will enable us to extend that partnership and inspire the next generation of machine learning engineers, by donating to the enrichment program and empowering them to get even more educational partners besides ourselves! Since 1995 Phi Alpha Theta history honor society club at San Jose State University has been serving to promote fellowship and community among history students and faculty. We seek to bring students, teachers, and writers together for intellectual and social exchanges which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways. Why are we raising the money? The History Club at San Jose State University has been pivotal in ensuring history students are acknowledged and commemorated for their achievements. We are hoping that after the pandemic the history club can continue to carry our legacy of sending well deserved students to the Annual Phi Alpha Theta Conference in Spring to represent San Jose State University. With additional support we will be able to return to a sense of normalcy by hosting special speakers series and social events that highlight our legacy. We will hold the financial means to continue directing historical conferences of our own at the university like we once did. Each year in May the history department and club has had a tradition of honoring undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees in history and social science teacher preparation. Since the pandemic hit in 2020 it has left a devastating impact on our ability to hold this heartfelt intimate community event for our students and families to celebrate the amazing accomplishments they have made. This great occasion offers an opportunity for family, friends, and those they hold close to their heart to come together and bond over the celebration of all their student’s achievements with faculty. We need your help in making the 23th Annual Phi Alpha Theta History Club Department Graduation Ceremony a memorable celebration for the Class of 2023 history students that have spent half of their college experience online due to the pandemic. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) administers the Master of Science in marine science program for San Jose State University and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both marine science education and research. An outfitted marine operations department, active research diving program and state of the art equipment allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety of disciplines including: marine ecology; the biology of marine plants, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds and mammals; oceanography and marine geology; chemistry and biogeochemistry. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues. The lab is situated within a few hundred meters of the Monterey Submarine Canyon, the largest on the west coast of North America,near the Elkhorn Slough, the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside of San Francisco Bay, and an important site for shorebirds and fishes. To the north and south are sand dunes, sandy beaches, and extensive kelp forest habitats along the rocky shoreline. Some of the most productive kelp forests and intertidal areas can be found in this region. How can you help? We are asking for support to fund student scholarships that will enable our young marine pioneers to perform their research. Doing science is expensive, whether it is going on a boat, diving, or acquiring reagents or performing any field- and lab-oriented study. MLML students are often challenged by research-related expenses or last minute unexpected costs and your contribution can make an enormous difference to their path to success.

SJSU Alumni Association The SJSU Alumni Association has established a memorial scholarship in honor of our friend Brian Bates. Brian served as the Associate Vice President for Alumni and Community Engagement for fifteen years. During his tenure, he made a tremendous impact on the university and the greater San Jose community through his leadership. He led efforts to establish a campus-wide commencement ceremony and raised scholarship giving from 30K to more than 80K annually. Brian enjoyed many hobbies and activities such as photography, travel, and trail walking but his favorite pastime was baseball. You could find him with his stats book in the stands, or listening intently to the feed of a game while relaxing at home. Often when visiting a friend in a different part of the country if it was baseball season he'd make sure to squeeze a game into his schedule. Brian was a leader on our campus and within the alumni relations community. As a colleague and friend Brian was thorough, patient and kind. He was smart and strategic and lifted others around him up. He was also highly principled and never deviated from doing the right thing even in the toughest of circumstances. He was committed to integrating diversity, equity and inclusion into the core of alumni and community engagement. SJSU Alumni Association has established an endowed scholarship that captures the spirit of justice that Brian advocated in everything he did. Every spring, BMES hosts the annual Bay Area Biomedical Device Conference. This is a student-run event intended to expose students to the latest advancements in the biomedical industry. The conference also provides students with the opportunity to network with industry professionals and exhibit the work they have completed in their senior project classes. This year, our conference will focus around the theme of “Sustainability-driven Healthcare Technologies.” For our 2022, we’ve transitioned into an in person conference which has increased our expenses from past virtual conferences. Our students are raising money to bring the best speakers and experts on sustainability to educate our audience on our theme. Funding will also contribute towards the purchase of marketing materials such as flyers and save the dates, dress shirts for students, and catering for our event. In addition to this, the funding will also support other BMES activities. With the help from sponsors, our students will be able to meet the funding goals set forth for the upcoming conference. The majority of our funding comes from attendee registrations and sponsorships; however, because we are transitioning into an in-person format our expenses will be higher. Our efforts are grassroots and we work with underrepresented minority, and first generation students to prepare them for inequity in the workplace. SJSU’s college of business brings together top Silicon Valley leaders, alumni, and students from all disciplines to talk about equity gap issues. The day includes a keynote speaker panel discussion and breakout group discussions, providing participants with inspirational experiences as well as practical advice and strategies from successful leaders. Students get to hear about career and life journeys and personal perspectives on leadership. We seek to create a platform for meaningful conversations with industry mentors who can inspire our students to aim high. What is our goal? In the SJSU College of Science, we use computational approaches to address a large array of global challenges, including understanding climate change, better addressing forest fires, addressing gerrymandering and understanding and preparing for earthquakes. Through hands-on partnerships between students and faculty, we use this broad array of computational approaches to gain critical insights into projects as diverse as understanding how small mammals called pika are impacted by climate change to discovering how to solve problems in quantum computing. The College of Science is known for providing high-quality hands-on research experiences with these computational approaches to solve our most challenging problems, which set our students up to succeed in their careers. Aerospace Engineering Our team is a senior project group hoping to design a RC model version of a a fire surveillance aircraft. The main design team are all seniors in Aerospace Engineering, but we also have some freshmen team members who are participating in the coding and computer aided design portion of the project. The aircraft that we want to actuate is a smaller, testable version of a bigger aircraft. It is a fire surveillance aircraft that will be able to fly long distances over large, fire prone areas in order to detect wildfires before they get out of control. There is a huge need for this kind of aircraft in wildfire prevention, as there are not many aircrafts that can do this. We need your help in raising money so that we can build an aircraft that effectively detects fires.

Our mission as a student chapter is to reinforce knowledge and hard skills by application, strengthen interclub relations through collaboration, and promote the importance of soft skills through teamwork. We also provide information to our students on the academic opportunities available on and outside of campus and promote interaction between students and reps from industry in order to further their professional development within the field. Why are we raising the money? We compete annually in the Human-Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) while also having our students compete in Autodesk challenges. We cover all three fields of engineering under the Mechanical Engineering Department with Thermal Systems, Mechatronics, and Design. We placed as high as 1st in our first Autodesk Challenge this summer with over 50% of our projects winning prizes. In the HPVC competition we’ve placed as high as 2nd and are looking to get first this year. We are raising money for the very high materials cost from manufacturing the HPVC and hosting the competition itself which we are confirmed to host in this spring on campus at SJSU.. At the Mechanical Engineering Department at San Jose State University, we strive to provide unique hands-on experiences to our students. We believe that mechanical engineers need to gain their expertise in the filed through experimentation and project work. The Mechanical Engineering Department hosts a machine shop that has the equipment needed for our students to complete basic machining and joining. This shop features multiple lathes, milling machines, power drills, welding machines, and other miscellaneous tools. This shop is a popular destination for our students during their projects and research work. In addition to the coursework, the shop also supports student competition teams including our very successful Formula SAE race team, Mini Baja, Spartan Hyperloop, ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers) student club’s human-powered vehicle challenge, and the Robotics club’s mars rover challenge, to name a few. The machine shop has been the department’s most valuable laboratory space. Why are we raising the money? We are raising money to replace an aging lathe in the machine shop with a brand-new machine. The lathe is the most popular machine in the shop and students frequently use it to turn machine parts and finish them. Currently, we have three manual lathes in the shop and all of them work throughout the day during the regular semesters. If one of them breaks down, it can delay various student projects and club activities for a significant amount. One of our lathes is over 40 years old. While it still performs its functions, it has been showing signs of its old age and has been breaking down regularly. By replacing the antiquated machine with a brand-new model, we can ensure that the student projects continue moving forward without any interruptions. We are raising money to purchase a new lathe as state and university funds are not sufficient to do so. How can you help? With your kind donations, we can purchase a brand-new lathe and replace the aging one. This makes a difference for our students as they can continue working on their hands-on projects without worrying about the lathe breaking down when they are ready to build their prototype. Our Formula SAE racing team has been very successful in the national level competition and was the top California team in both the combustion and eclectic categories in 2022. Our Spartan Hyperloop team has been the second place Winners of the SpaceX Hyperloop Levitation competition in 2019. Our ASME student teams have won numerous competitions in the past. Despite the winning or losing in these competitions, they bring amazing hands-on learning opportunities for our students. Help support the department of Mechanical Engineering during this year's Day of Giving. MechEngDOG22 Who are we? The Mechanical Engineering Department at San Jose State University is one of the largest engineering departments in the university and is home for 900 students and 40 faculty and staff members. While our primary mission is to educate the next generation of mechanical engineers, our faculty excel in their research areas as well. Spread across three disciplines (Design, Mechatronics and Robotics, Thermal and Fluid Engineering), our faculty strive to deliver the best research experiences for our students. Last year alone, our faculty and students published 45 reviewed journal or conference articles. In addition to the state-of-the-art research, our faculty invest their time in finding solutions for the issues our community faces. Such research projects range from creating a wearable device to assist differently-abled population with walking to the implementation of a fully automatic solar-powered transportation system to alleviate the traffic congestion in the city of San Jose. An excellent example of how the faculty research contributes to the community is the building of a low-cost ventilator system for COVID patients during the peak of the pandemic in 2020. Why are we raising the money? Our faculty are delivering amazing research opportunities and hands-on research exposure to our students without any direct support from the state. It is often a struggle to find the money to purchase and maintain research equipment, replace consumables such as microcontrollers, sensors and 3D printer filaments and to support faculty travel to professional venues where they disseminate the research work. After establishing their research, faculty typically bring money through their grant proposals to various federal and private entities. However, for our younger faculty, it is a struggle to find money to establish their research. The aim of this Mechanical Engineering Faculty Support Fund is to enable faculty research through adequate funding. This fund will indirectly benefit our students as they participate in faculty research projects. How can you help? Your donations can make a difference! As our faculty members engage in research to support the community, their profession and the country as a whole, they always worry about where the resources are coming from. With your help, the Mechanical Engineering Department will fund a Faculty Support Fund that can fund small equipment purchases, maintenance and repair or equipment, creation of new hands-on research projects and the travel to professional venues. By enabling faculty research, you can help to improve the research capabilities of the university and this can benefit the community through community-focused research projects that our faculty are always excited about!

Did you know that San Jose State University is a Hispanic Serving Institution serving over 26% Latinos of its plus 30,000 student population? The cost of attendance at SJSU is $29,058 which is 52% of a Latinx family’s annual income! The high cost of a college education continues to rise and is a barrier for our SJSU Latinx students. In addition, Latino students face unique circumstances like family emergency situations, lack of feeling connected to campus and financial stress pushes students to work longer hours and spend less time being full time students. These circumstances extend the college experience for many, or for some are the reasons why students discontinue their education. With over 26% Latino student population, our students are the 2nd lowest retained student population. The Latino Alumni Network’s Solution - Support students with scholarships and community Established in 2011, the SJSU Latino Alumni Network exists to provide financial support and retention for Latino students, and create a community for SJSU Latino alumni and students to promote professional and personal growth. In 2018, LAN awarded its first two scholarships and has supported 12 students in total. On an average, LAN receives over 100 applications each year from qualified applicants with financial need. LAN has a five year plan in place to raise $50,000 to establish an endowment while continuing to increase the number of scholarships it awards to students each year. An endowment will allow LAN to create a legacy for future generations of SJSU Latino students. Every dollar makes a difference! In the 2022-2023 school year, the SJSU Latino Alumni Network will award even more scholarships to deserving Latino Spartans and we need your help! With your donation, LAN will be able to award up to six scholarships next year and save towards our goal of $50,000 to endow a scholarship in spring 2023. The Mechanical Engineering Department at San Jose State University strives to provide the engineering workforce needed for the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our mission is to provide the best educational experiences for our undergraduate and graduate students through a variety of hands-on experiences. Mechanical Engineering is best taught through hands-on experimentation. During their studies at the ME department, our students complete up to five projects, a number of labs with experimentation work, and a year-long senior project. A good majority of our senior projects are sponsored by the Bay Area Industry and the student groups get opportunities to work with industry professionals during the period. A small fraction of our undergraduate students and a majority of our graduate students get to experience cutting-edge research in faculty research labs. We take pride in our ability to provide such unique exposure to our students before they graduate with their Mechanical Engineering degree. Why are we raising the money? Recently, the department has been struggling to support the resources for students to complete the hands-on experiences. While the state support is only sufficient to keep the lab-based classes running, we often need to upgrade or replace equipment in these labs. 20% of our senior projects do not have sponsors and students often spend money out of their pocket due to the department’s inability to support them financially. Several of our Masters projects also require additional sponsorship. While our students produce amazing research working with our faculty, several of them are unable to disseminate their results in front of a professional audience due to a lack of funding for conference travel. How can you help? We would love your support to raise a “Mechanical Engineering Student Support Fund.” This money will be exclusively used to support students’ hands-on experiences, experimentation work, senior and master's projects, research projects, and travel to professional conferences to disseminate cutting-edge research. Help support Reed Magazine during this year's Day of Giving. Reed Magazine Who are we? Reed Magazine is the oldest literary journal in California. Established in 1867—just 10 years after the founding of the CSU here on the San José State University campus—Reed has grown from a mere pamphlet to a stout, award-winning journal that publishes art, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from around the world. Reed Magazine is also a class. A year-long sequence open to graduate students and upper-division English majors, English 133 offers students experience in editing and publishing and all the processes and operations required to produce a yearly anthology: copyediting, design, marketing, promotions, sales, distribution, and management of a robust website and social media presence. Fall semester, students review and select from thousands of submissions the material to include in the journal, which is produced and printed the following spring. Why are we raising the money? Reed is challenged to maintain its considerable forward momentum within the modest budget it is currently afforded. Printing and shipping represent the journal's biggest expenses. Other significant costs include student travel to AWP and operational costs such as funding our contests—which are consistently rated among the industry’s best. Further, we are eager to acquire a state-of-the-art scanner to catalyze our ambitious project to digitize and preserve our entire 156-year archive, to be housed at the MLK Library on campus. How can you help? As costs climb for printing—up 35% since COVID—and for shipping, we must offset those increases by cutting pages (i.e., rejecting more submissions) or restricting the very activities that have helped raise our profile. A gift of $500 could help defray the cost of printing 50 books or support distribution to 100 subscribers. Chief among our successful promotional activities is our participation at AWP, a highlight each spring for Reed editors. Increasing the budget for student travel would expose students to dozens of craft talks and panels and hundreds of actively publishing authors, editors, agents, independent presses, and fellowship and grant opportunities. A gift of $250 could help send three student editors to this year’s conference in Seattle. Finally, consistent with its standing among the most competitive contests among literary journals, Reed awards prizes of up to $1,333 to winners of its annual contests. A gift of $100 could finance the Emerging Voices Contest, which encourages local high school writers and artists to publish their work.

SJSU Robotics SJSU Robotics is a student-led robotics club, with the goal of giving students the opportunity to develop their technical skills while pushing the boundaries of robotics and design. Our club is made of a multi-disciplinary team of students earning degrees in mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and business. We work to develop a Mars rover for the University Rover Challenge (URC) where we compete against robotics clubs at universities across the nation. Some of the tasks are rover needs to complete are to extract soil samples from the environment and perform analysis on the samples for life, and move autonomously through rough environments. We strive to bring out the best in our members and prepare them for professional life after college. Current members and alumni have worked at companies and organizations such as Tesla, Google, Lockheed Martin, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Stanford University and University of Pennsylvania. SJSU Robotics does not require any club payments from members to maintain our level of accessibility to anyone who is a hardworking and motivated student. We rely on funds from generous donors to remain a free club to join and fund the development of our robots.

Welcome to the Study Abroad & Away office in the College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE) at San Jose State University. CPGE’s mission is to provide access to relevant educational programs that allow individuals to gain knowledge and skills to create a solid foundation for them to be engaged and productive members of a global society. We are committed to internationalizing our campus in order to cultivate an environment of diversity and inclusion, and to graduate students who are prepared to live and lead in an increasingly globalized world. Our vision is to develop global citizens – students, scholars, and alumni who are deeply cognizant of living in a connected and interdependent world. In support of this mission, we offer 350 study abroad programs around the world. We are proud of our robust offerings to enable every Spartan to participate in an immersive global experience before they graduate from SJSU. However, we know that many of our historically underrepresented minority students are unable to bridge the required expenses associated with such value-added experiences. While students can use their financial aid to cover much of the normal educational expenses such as tuition and housing, we know that many of our students are simply unable to pay for expenses that are not covered by financial aid. We are aware of the growing need to create leadership development opportunities for students who participate in our study abroad programs to further engage in the university’s internationalization goals. Now that borders are opening up again, we are seeing a growing desire for students to engage globally. We are preparing to launch our Global Ambassadors leadership development program which is now offered in the Spartan Leadership Opportunities Catalog offered by the Division of Student Affairs. Why are we raising money? We need help to launch three new initiatives inspired by the social justice-mindedness of our former Dean, Dr. Ruth Huard. Equity & Inclusion Scholarships: We plan to offer scholarships to incentivize historically underrepresented minority students to participate in any of our 350+ study abroad program opportunities around the world. We especially want to help offset some of the expenses that are often required, but are either not covered by their financial aid assistance or due before aid is applied. These expenses can include required program or housing abroad deposits, student visas, international insurance coverage, and others. DACA Students Abroad: We want to level the playing field for DACA students who have an additional required $575 filing fee for the UCSC Form I-131: Application for Travel Documents, which enables them to participate in international education programs and be able to return to the U.S. We want to subsidize this expense to reduce the financial barrier and enable them to participate in a global experience like every student at SJSU. Global Ambassadors Leadership Development: As we recover from the pandemic which greatly impacted global education, we are preparing to launch a new Global Ambassador leadership development program. We want to provide programming funds for current and former study abroad students to engage in the internationalization goals of the university. How can you help? You can help the internationalization goals of the university by donating to our fundraising goals. While we’ve set an ambitious goal of raising the initial fund of $5,000 on Giving Tuesday, we know that the more funds we can raise beyond that will go directly to supporting our Global Spartans. We are raising money to support student members to attend a state-wide professional conference as an effort to support our student scholars, inspire more students, and diversify the profession to better serve our communities. The California Speech Language Hearing Association (CSHA) holds an annual conference that targets students and professionals in the field with the latest research and professional education opportunities. This is a great opportunity for students to network, and learn about the many ways our profession contributes to the wellbeing of those with communication disorders and differences. This has traditionally been the venue that brings inspiration and excitement in students to continue with their education into the profession. This will be the first year since the pandemic that we will be able to send our students to this conference, but only with your help! How can you help? San Jose State University’s GOAL (Generation of Aspirational Leaders) program aims to establish a diverse and inclusive university community that inspires students to reach their full potential. With its focus on three C’s—career, curriculum, and community—GOAL provides resources to build students’ leadership skills, help them achieve excellence in academia and professional development, while creating a sense of belonging to both SJSU and the larger community. GOAL helps students develop a wide variety of critical leadership skills while firmly grounding them in professional ethics. The program is a learning and professional development community—for students, led by students—where students have the chance to learn from each other and professional and academic mentors by sharing thoughts, ideas, and knowledge. GOAL delivers a variety of community-building initiatives, professional-development workshops, and experiential learning opportunities that bring together participants and mentors from all walks of life (faculty, staff, students, civic leaders, professionals, community members and more). Why are we raising the money? The GOAL Leadership Retreat is designed to inspire students to reach their full potential. Students will have an opportunity to refine their transferable leadership skills while working closely with our industry partners in a relaxing and immersive experience in the Santa Cruz Mountains. GOAL’s Spring Leadership Retreat seeks to bring together multidisciplinary teams of SJSU students from all backgrounds and experience levels across campus to analyze and proffer solutions to existing community problems. Through a series of engaging activities and workshops, the retreat will address the following topics: Vision Mapping Creativity & Innovation Emotional Intelligence & Leadership Team Building Ideation & Design Thinking Business Ethics After the retreat, students will have an opportunity to participate in community engagement and research-based learning projects. GOAL will spearhead these projects with its advisors, other SJSU faculty, and community partners for one month after the retreat then present their actionable recommendations to a diverse and experienced panel of judges. These projects will expose students to authentic community challenges and encourage them to apply their skills, stimulating both their academic advancement and cognitive development, while continuing to enhance their professional soft and technical skills. We are SOLES, the Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists, and the SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) chapter at San Jose State University. Our mission is to empower our Latino communities through the advancement of Latino success in STEM. We focus on providing professional, social, and personal development as well as community outreach to our members. SOLES invites guest speakers and industry leaders all year long to share their advice, knowledge, and resources they have with our members. As well as host professional development workshops throughout the year! These opportunities inspire and lead our members to achieve success within their respective fields. Industry speakers often share their stories and personal experiences to assist in our members' personal development and growth as Latino students in STEM. Besides guest speakers, SOLES hosts professional workshops such as resume or interview workshops with industry professionals to further our members’ readiness to succeed in the work field. Additionally, to support our members professionally we provide the opportunity for our students to attend conferences and conventions, expanding their professional network, and providing the opportunities for these students to land internships and full-time opportunities. SOLES also hosts social events and activities where members can interact with each other and grow not only their peer network but their sense of belonging to the college en nuestra familia. As part of our community outreach efforts, we also volunteer at local middle schools to motivate k-8 students to pursue higher education in STEM through our Co-Chapter SE(Science Extravangaza) which provides workshops testing science and engineering theories using engaging and creative STEM projects these students make with our guidance. SE also hosts THE largest student volunteer ran event at SJSU in STEM every year hosting at least 400 middle school students who get the opportunity to innovate and create with their own hands physical projects that test STEM concepts, inspiring the next generation of engineers. Why are we raising the money? SOLES is seeking funding for the SHPE National Convention, the largest gathering of Hispanic STEM students and professionals. This 5-day event is a great opportunity for students to network with successful Latino engineers in fortune 500 companies, work on their professional development through workshops and competitions, and acquire the skills necessary to obtain internships and jobs. Students that attend the convention are able to attend the career fair with the opportunity of obtaining an internship and full-time offers for graduating seniors. This experience is transformative for many who attend, as not only do these students return inspired and eager to succeed at SJSU but are able to share their experiences with the other members of SOLES and the greater SJSU community, motivating not only them but also other students in our organizations and campus. Students that attend the convention are also able to make connections with industry leaders. The estimated goal of members to attend the convention is 20 SJSU students, and the goal of funds required to sponsor this quantity is around $10,000. How can you help? The KACCD is a remarkable no-cost-for-services clinic that has supported the San Jose and South Bay areas in providing screening, assessment, and therapy services for clients with communication disorders across the lifespan. For 6 decades, the clinic has provided services to the community while training undergraduate and graduate students to become speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Why are we raising the money? We are raising money to support the final stages of an upgrade to our facilities, materials and equipment in the Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders. SJSU Management Information Systems Association (MISA) prepares students for successful careers in the dynamic and fast-paced field of business and technology. We provide our members with opportunities for professional and personal development, leadership, and networking while engaging with premier Silicon Valley companies, working professionals, and peers. MISA strives to shape the upcoming leaders of Silicon Valley with the incorporation of their core values of Professionalism, Networking, Knowledge, Leadership, Community, Innovation, and Opportunity. Alongside regular MISA events, our organization provides members programs to help further their personal and professional growth. Our programs include the MISA Consulting Group, Big/Little, and Women Mentorship Program. Why are we raising the money? During the COVID-19 pandemic, the SJSU MISA eBoard recognized the challenges that students faced having equitable access to technology and the impact it had on their educational goals. In response, SJSU MISA launched the MISA Tech Fund to close the digital equity gap by providing students with demonstrated financial hardship due to the pandemic or extenuating circumstance access to a laptop & mouse. I felt so lost and overwhelmed, but I made it to San Jose State University and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My parents have sacrificed more than I could even imagine for me to be pursuing higher education, and I want them to know that their efforts have paid off. Along my journey of self-discovery, I discovered my passion for computers. I found a major that I absolutely love and I am invested in my studies. I spend my free time running experiments on my laptop to gain a better understanding of how our internet infrastructure works. I try to pay back to my community by teaching local high school students computer basics. Recently, my efforts have been interrupted by my laptop’s hardware issues. Receiving the MISA Tech Fund Award would mean that someone out there acknowledges the journey I have been through and is willing to support me even further. Being able to receive the help I need from SJSU represents a community where we uplift others and give students at a disadvantage an equal ground to start. The award would lift a great financial burden off my shoulders. Technology is very expensive which leads to me not having the same opportunities as other students. Being a first-generation college student adds to the difficulty of buying expensive tech items. I don't ask my parents for help when buying tech because it's a large expense for them. This means I often have to save up and buy technology myself. My laptop is very big and bulky, it also often shuts down on me when I need it the most. The battery life is not the best and is often unreliable. Being able to have a Surface Laptop pro would be perfect because of its great portability. Receiving the Award to me would mean gaining the ability to learn more about the things I love as well as having a reliable laptop I can carry around and get work done with. When I heard about the MISA Tech Fund award I was eager to apply because of the great benefits I would gain if I received the award. I am very thankful for the opportunity to apply to this fund and MISA for providing the opportunity to win a laptop that can benefit me as well as others." -David Ortiz, MISA Tech Fund Recipient "Scholarship opportunities are very rare for an international student living in the U.S. Moreover, many people, when mentioned that I am an international student, seem to get the wrong opinion of me. I don’t drive a Mercedes, I don’t wear Balenciaga shoes, and I bet that you won’t be able to guess where I am from. I was born and raised in a country called Myanmar (formerly Burma), which is one of the poorest countries in the world. Growing up, my circumstances were far from that of the people who were born here. Currently, there is a civil war raging back home. I am one of the lucky people who was able to escape temporarily to study in the States. For that, I have my parents to thank, particularly my mom. My mom is the current breadwinner of the family. Despite being born in one of the most destitute countries in the world, she single handedly financed my entire college career in the U.S. and I am forever grateful for that. As her hair slowly turns from black to grey, my desire to give back to my mom grows stronger. The MISA Tech Fund Award would allow me to take a step in building my career and using what I earn from my jobs to pay back my family. SJSU Baja The Spartan Racing Baja is an entirely student-built and fundraised car, designed and built to compete in the annual Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Competition. The goal of the club is to enhance the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom and help students develop new ones. This is done by providing the opportunity for real-world research, design, manufacturing, and business experience, all the way throughout the product development process. The funds raised from this campaign will be primarily put toward lodging and travel cost that will get us to 2022 Baja SAE Competitions in Washington and (possibly) Ohio. Secondarily they will also be put toward the new ideas we are innovating on this year. Specifically the chassis, custom designed gearbox, and suspension system. The car obviously can’t be put together without a frame, and going to the competition to see our car perform is one of the most rewarding moments of the year. This is where we get to see all our hard work come to life! The purpose of this campaign is to help us complete the manufacturing process and travel to the competition, but we need your help to accomplish this! The SJSU Grad Slam, also known as a three-minute thesis competition, is an exciting and fast-paced event where graduate students present their research in 3 minutes and with one slide to a non-specialist audience. The students compete in front of a live audience and a panel of judges, and are scored on their ability to communicate their work and its impact effectively. This is not a research competition, it is a research communication competition. Why is it important? In addition to being an outstanding way to highlight SJSU’s faculty-mentored graduate student research, Grad Slam is a transformative professional development experience for graduate students. As participants in the SJSU Grad Slam, graduate students attend a series of workshops to develop their presentation skills. The extensive preparation that they do over the semester culminates in a live, on-stage presentation, so every participant has the experience of performing in the “limelight”. The two resulting skills: the ability to speak well in public and the ability to succinctly summarize one's work without jargon, are both great assets in nearly every career. Is Grad Slam just for scientists and engineers? Certainly not! SJSU encourages Grad Slam participation from graduate students engaged in research, scholarship, or creative activity in any discipline. For example, in the 2022 Grad Slam, our finalists included a poet, a music historian, an educational counselor, a public health student, two urban planners, a meteorologist, and three students in computer science or engineering disciplines. Do SJSU Grad Slam winners go on to other competitions? Yes. The first place winner of the SJSU Grad Slam is invited to represent SJSU at the Western Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition, and the winner of that regional event goes on to the national finals sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools. In addition, the top two winners of the SJSU Grad Slam are invited to participate in the California State University-wide competition in which representatives from the 23 CSU campuses compete for state bragging rights. How can I help with this amazing event? You can help by simply engaging. Whether you attend the event as an audience member, or participate as a judge, or help mentor a student, or encourage your company to sponsor a prize, your participation can make a big difference. Kinesiology, broadly defined is the study of human body movement, which encompasses the biophysical, behavior and sociocultural aspects. With roughly 900 undergraduate students and 40 faculty members the department is a leader in research, education and practice regarding human movement. Undergraduate students are leaders and have served as important research assistants on faculty-led research projects, as well as conducting their own original research. It is the department’s belief that having undergraduates immersed in research will provide them with the knowledge, practice and networks to be successful health advocates in their future professions. Why are we raising money? The Department of Kinesiology is raising money to help support student travel to academic conferences, workshops and trainings. Students attending academic conferences have the opportunity to learn, interact and network with other researchers and professionals that will ultimately help them develop their own professional journeys. Help support the Library Research Scholars during this year's Day of Giving. Library Research Scholars Meet Eleanor, Inaya, and Elham, the 2022/23 Library Research Scholars! All three are undergraduate students who applied to join SJSU King Library’s intensive year-long paid experience to expand their research skills by conducting a research project in their fields of study. The three Library Research Scholars were matched with librarian mentors, Andrew, Michael, and Anne Marie, and every week together they attend cohort meetings to learn how to explore their research questions, search, evaluate and organize sources, and implement various research methodologies. By the end of the program, each student will have developed a scholarly product that will be published in the SJSU's institutional repository. The three scholars also have the opportunity to present their work at SJSU's Annual Student Research Competition. The Library Research Scholars program (LRSP) costs $7,000 per student. This amount allows the library to fund one additional student to participate in this impactful, paid, year-long program and produce a scholarly output in support of their academic career and development. The SJSU Library wants to ensure more opportunities for students to get access to this outstanding and highly competitive program. Last year’s acceptance rate was less than 5%. Filipino Alumni Network (FAN) was established in the Summer of 2021 with the amazing dedication of our founding board. We are an organization that is focused on career development, cultural awareness, and connection with our Filipinx Spartan community and allies alike. Since our establishment in Summer of 2021, FAN has been able to hit the ground running. Earlier this Spring, FAN hosted its official “Launch Event” where we networked and broke bread, in-person, with over 40 different alumni in attendance at San Pedro Square here in Downtown San Jose. Next we held our “Power in the Pipeline” virtual panel where we invited other Filipinx alumni associations from across California to speak with us about their own journeys and any advice they have for us as we begin this work as a new alumni network. And even most recently, we kicked off this October by celebrating Filipino American History Month with our very first virtual career panel titled “Filipinos in Leadership”. We were fortunate to be joined by over 90 registrants in the hopes of learning how to navigate the workplace as a Filipinx professional. Now while this past year has already been so much fun, we definitely don’t want to stop here. Building and growing a legacy like this is truly going to be an intergenerational effort, and with that, we need your help. Why are we raising the money? This year, FAN hopes to advance the success and pipeline of our Filipinx community by creating our very own FAN Scholarship Fund, available to both current and rising SJSU students in need. Here in Santa Clara County alone, Filipinxs make up nearly 100 thousand residents of our County’s population. In 2021, South Bay based news outlet, San Jose Spotlight, published an article that highlighted how 1 in every 5 Filipinx students dropped out of High School is Santa Clara County during the pandemic. This alarming statistic, coupled with the rising costs of higher education, was the final straw. Our community was hurting, and we had to do something. How can you help? Our work takes the form of books and scholarly articles, but also includes op-eds, conference presentations, participation in working groups, and public-facing philosophy events. We’re sharing our work in all these ways because we know critical thinking, ethical sensitivity, and the ability to pursue hard questions about our world and place in it can make the world better for everyone. In the past, we’ve hosted in-person talks and spearheaded a University-wide course in which student teams proposed initiatives to address our changing climate. More recently, we’ve supported SJSU’s Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl and Bioethics Bowl teams and hosted virtual public talks from experts on social media moderation, vaccine hesitancy, science journalism, immigration ethics, the ethical dimensions of being a scientist with a minoritized identity, and the moral worldviews presented by “prestige” television shows.There is so much more we want to do, like fostering ethics-focused research collaborations, both among SJSU faculty and students and between SJSU-affiliated researchers and researchers from other universities or organizations, and developing and disseminating resources like white papers or toolkits to support folks at SJSU and beyond in developing effective and meaningful ethics coursework and training. We can support ethics-focused research with small research grants or student scholarships, or even establish an “ethics residency” program to bring ethics-focused faculty and professionals from the private sector to SJSU to engage with the Center and the broader SJSU community. Your donation can help us cover the costs of our public-facing speaker series and research initiatives, as well as supporting student-faculty collaborations to engage a wider audience in vital questions about how we share a world with each other.

Active Minds @ SJSU seeks to bridge cultural gaps in receiving mental health, considering the university's uniquely diverse school with its large pool of underrepresented minorities, first-generation college, and low-income students. Historically, people of color have disproportionately higher rates of suicide and lack accessibility to mental health services. The core cause can be attributed to mental health being considered "taboo" in several cultures,deterring many to seek help. Aligning with Active Minds' mission in dismantling mental health stigma, our funding is necessary for our events promoting the Counseling and Psychological Services available in the Wellness Center. Additional missions include building the future generation of mental healthcare leaders within our club and connecting with Bay Area local nonprofits to ensure students have all resources needed. Why are we raising the money? As the Active Minds San Jose State University chapter, we want to represent our beloved school at the national conference in Washington D.C. It will take place in early July, with a comprehensive agenda detailing how we can empower young adults within advocacy, uplift the wellness climate on campus, and build critical leadership skills to prosper as mental health pioneers. In addition, we have the opportunity to band with mental health advocates nationwide, brainstorming innovative ideas to incorporate on-campus. These donations will go towards hotel, traveling, and ticket arrangements. The rest of the proceeds will go to our efforts to increase the Counseling and Psychological Services’ visibility on-campus and dismantling mental health stigmas. Support the Early Childhood Institute during this special Day of Giving These are exciting times for early learning in California! To provide early learning opportunities to more 3- and 4-year-olds, the state is expanding publicly-funded transitional kindergarten and state preschool programs. As SJSU’s hub for early childhood research, training, and advocacy on campus, the Early Childhood Institute (ECI) aims to support the field so that both public and private early childhood programs are delivered using equitable, responsive, and inclusive approaches. ECI is committed to “pushing up” the best practices from the early childhood field into this changing landscape. These practices include play-based learning – a cornerstone of high-quality early childhood programming. Professionals working with children and students preparing for careers in early childhood have questions about changes in the early learning landscape and how these shifts are going to impact their programs, practices, and educational and career paths. The Early Childhood Institute 2023 Professional Meeting is designed to address these questions. Presentations and panel discussions with faculty/researchers, policymakers, and leaders from the field will engage the audience in conversations about the focus and impact of policy changes on both early learning programs and the professionals working with young children. The conference theme will be: Play-based learning in equitable, responsive, and inclusive universal preschool programs. Four types of sessions will be offered to meet the needs of all attendees: 1) Policy sessions will provide an overview of recently adopted policy changes and their impact on current programs for children and for students pursuing related careers. 2) Provider sessions will feature local early learning professionals sharing their use of play-based learning along with innovations they have already been making to address changes in the field. 3) Research sessions will highlight what is known about delivering equitable, responsive, and inclusive play-based opportunities for all children. 4) Networking/Informational sessions will showcase SJSU- and community-based programs and resources designed to support participants’ professional growth.

SJSU's Opera Theater Program San Jose State University’s Opera Theater Program is fun, engaging and ever so lively! From our double bill of La Curandera and Trial by Jury last year, students left audiences roaring with laughter as they heard the ¡¡Ayyyyy!! from la Curandera as it tried to cure Alba’s jealous heart. This one-act comic opera was a refreshing take on the same story as Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, where the sorcerer is replaced with a curandera, a Mexican folk healer and magician. From laughter to “Silence in Court!” Students also performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, a classic and hilarious one-act comic opera. Audiences laughed out loud at the antics on stage as ex-lovers Edwin and Angelina battle it out in a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit. Performances like La Curandera and Trial by Jury is why San Jose State University’s Opera Theater Program is here. Over the years, many of our alumni have gone on to perform worldwide and win prestigious awards. All have noted the influence and impact of Joseph Frank, a tenor and Professor Emeritus of voice in the Opera Theater Program. When Professor Frank retired in 2019, he proposed the creation of the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment as his legacy to the Opera Theater Program. It was the very first endowment to support the teaching and performance of opera at SJSU. Today, it provides support to the Opera Theater Program and scholarships to help train the next generation of opera performers. To date, we have raised over $100,000 for the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment. Help us meet our goal of $20,000 today to ensure a level of opera training and development that will be transformative for our students. We are a student organization, mainly majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering, with a mission to provide knowledge, training, networking opportunities, and recognition to enhance the skills and effectiveness of the Industrial & Systems Engineering profession and those individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. As a university organization, we strive to drive communication between students and faculty, connect and expose members to the industry, and create a social and professional community for fellow students to work, study and collaborate. As a global organization, IISE strives to help its members improve complex organizations around the world and across industries. Why are we raising this money? Our organization focuses on the professional and personal success of each of our members. To do this, we plan on funding events that would benefit all of our students by connecting them with each other, faculty and industry professionals. Our main goal is to fund transportation for as many students as possible to attend the annual IISE conference in New Orleans in May. This conference connects students across America with industry professionals and provides networking and other professional opportunities. Other goals we have are to provide transportation to different industry events/tours, some of which include Disney, Apple, Tesla and more. We are also looking to plan a career day specifically for Industrial Engineering students where we will host 20-30 companies in order to help secure jobs/internships during and after college. In addition, our graduating seniors will receive IISE graduation stoles as well as other branded items and we are looking to fund that as well. How can you help? Going on its fourth year, Mock Trial SJSU is at its highest membership and student interest this 2022 season. Our diverse team is composed of 25 students led by our board of directors who are all women of color in pre-law. Mock Trial SJSU’s goals within this school year are to travel and compete against other universities in AMTA tournaments, as well as establish our program as a resource for pre-law students in San Jose State University. Why are we raising the money? As a student organization, the funding and resources for our program has been limited. Additionally, as the program expands throughout the years, more students are interested in traveling, competing and learning about the legal system. We are raising money to fund our resources and competitions. We are the Men’s Lacrosse team at SJSU, a student-run organization and sports team that has been operating on campus for over 35 years. While we, of course, like to win games and attend championships, our primary goal is to help prepare young men to lead meaningful and impactful post-collegiate lives by sharpening invaluable life skills such as leadership and mental toughness. Moreover, it's an experience that forges friendships and irreplaceable memories that last a lifetime. Why are we raising the money? We have always prided ourselves on the fact that our program is a no-experience necessary one, and that we will train and provide guidance to students regardless of their skill level. However because of the cost of equipment, coaching, medical support, travel, and more, lacrosse is an expensive sport. For over 35 years, our team has been primarily funded by student dues. University support only accounts for 10% of our program funds. As a result, our dues have been high barrier to entry for new or underprivileged students. For this reason, we are looking to fund an endowment for the lacrosse program, with the goal of lowering the financial burden on our players. Specifically, this will aid in paying operational, competitive, or financial needs the club may incur in its’ pursuit to practice, compete, recruit, participate in, or otherwise help grow the sport of lacrosse and the Club at large. How can you help? For our endowment, we’re looking to raise $50,000 as the principle, and to that end any amount is greatly appreciated.

Help the Moss Landing Marine Lab graduate students raise money for scholarships to support their work! Moss Landing Marine Lab Who are we? We are graduate students at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). MLML and San José State University administer the Master of Science in Marine Science program for California State Universities in northern and central California, which is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both education and research. Our marine operations department, active research diving program, and state-of-the-art equipment allow for cutting-edge research in a wide variety of disciplines, including marine ecology, oceanography, geology, chemistry and biogeochemistry. We study organisms big and small, including seaweeds, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds, large mammals, and tiny plankton. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers, and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues. Why are we raising money? Every year, MLML students come together to raise funds for scholarships that support student research. Typically, we organize and run a large, two-day educational fundraising event called the MLML Open House. The goal of this event is to engage members of the public in educational activities and display the research that is made possible by these student scholarships. To minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we have decided to remain in the online format for this year. Last year’s CrowdFunding campaign was a huge success and raised over $17,000 towards student scholarships. In lieu of a live event, we would like to continue to use this crowdfunding campaign to raise money for student scholarships. We’re hoping to show how our community's support can help us to meet our scholarship fundraising goals, as we continue to educate the public through this page and our updates. How can you help? Providing opportunities for others to succeed was paramount to Lawrence during his 42 years of service and excellence in the media relations industry. This internship will provide a platform to grow and develop in the sports media industry while interning with the Spartan Athletics Media Relations Department. Lawrence was a titan in the sports media industry. He built his legacy on providing excellent customer service, thoughtfulness and of course a bit of quirkiness. Lawrence made it a point to get to know all of the student-athletes that he worked with. Not only their names, but also their hometowns, previous schools, career statistics, and more. He had a passion for telling the stories of Spartan student-athletes that couldn't be found in a box score or game recap. Although Lawrence kept himself plenty busy with work, he always made time to be with his family, including his niece and nephews. SJSU Rocket Club HARP (High Altitude Rocketry Program) seeks to expose students to a real-life engineering challenge. Students will execute engineering design, manufacturing, and launch principles in creating the third HARP Vehicle —HARP Genesis— and launching to hopefully over 50,000 feet! This year’s focus is to build a solid foundation of knowledge and talent for future missions. We hope to one day reach the Karman Line at 100 km. Our current design configuration and simulations show 50,000 feet is obtainable with our $5,000 fundraising goal. HARP is establishing a new culture for students in the College of Engineering. We are pushing for multiple disciplines within the team, broadening the exposure of the program while emulating a real-world dynamic and multidisciplinary environment. Students participating in HARP are able to combine theoretical knowledge from upper-division courses to collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. This experiential learning is invaluable for career building and engineering professionalism. HARP will be innovative for students, faculty, and the college and university by providing a platform to reach subspace altitudes and explore via science and engineering, life above the earth. Help fund Akbayan SJSU's annual PCN performance! Akbayan SJSU Akbayan SJSU is the nonprofit student-run Pilipino American organization on campus. In the Filipino language, Akbayan means “Embracing in Friendship.” For over 42 years, our organization has developed different programs and events under our four pillars of academics, social, community and political, and cultural. Because of our professional and organized execution of events and programs, Akbayan is one of the largest organizations on campus with over 650 active general members. In addition to facilitating a safe and welcoming space for a diverse population, we continuously give back to the Pilipino American community. As a student organization, we’ve developed a mentorship program that aims to pair members with other students as mentors to ensure success and a high retention rate in our demographic. As a cultural and social organization, we educate our members through workshops specializing in the arts as well as our history. Our organization’s true purpose is to encourage students to “embrace in friendship” while facing the struggles of academia, mental health, and cultural identity. The Pilipinx Cultural Night (PCN) is a program that has been a tradition for many Pilipino American organizations throughout the United States. For SJSU, this is our 34th anniversary. For two nights, PCN showcases our members through the expressive arts, including and not limited to cultural, contemporary, & modern dances; choir & band; tech & props; and acting & scriptwriting. In addition, we expose our members to opportunities in marketing, public relations, graphic design, and financial planning. This is our first production back with in-person rehearsals aimed for a 2 night fully in-person premier since our production of PCN 32: Morena back in 2020. As the success of our student-run production rises, we require more funding to contribute to the growing production and attraction for the many years to come for our Pilipinx Cultural Nights. This year, our venue has been secured at the Morris Dailey Auditorium at San Jose State University and we have a cast of roughly 100 members. All the proceeds made through this program go directly back to the organization to continue a legacy of giving back to our community and sharing the voices of our ancestors. Help us create an endowed scholarship in memory of Brian Bates. SJSU Alumni Association The SJSU Alumni Association has established a memorial scholarship in honor of our friend Brian Bates. They are currently willing to match all donations to this campaign up to $25,000 to help us endow this scholarship in Brian's memory. Brian served as the Associate Vice President for Alumni and Community Engagement for fifteen years. During his tenure, he made a tremendous impact on the university and the greater San Jose community through his leadership. He led efforts to establish a campus-wide commencement ceremony and raised scholarship giving from 30K to more than 80K annually. Brian enjoyed many hobbies and activities such as photography, travel, and trail walking but his favorite pastime was baseball. You could find him with his stats book in the stands, or listening intently to the feed of a game while relaxing at home. Often when visiting a friend in a different part of the country if it was baseball season he'd make sure to squeeze a game into his schedule. Brian was a leader on our campus and within the alumni relations community. As a colleague and friend Brian was thorough, patient and kind. He was smart and strategic and lifted others around him up. He was also highly principled and never deviated from doing the right thing even in the toughest of circumstances. He was committed to integrating diversity, equity and inclusion into the core of alumni and community engagement. SJSU Alumni Association will match up to $25,000 to establish an endowed scholarship that will capture the spirit of justice that Brian advocated in everything he did. Help SJSU students participate in an opportunity to bring about collective action on health, education, voting rights reform, and criminal justice reform. Winter Leadership Institute Who are we? Social Movement, Leadership Institute, and Freedom Ride: The Winter Leadership Institute is part of SJSU’s involvement in a national project called The Ride Revived. The Ride Revived is a student-led national campaign that utilizes educational summits and grassroots organizing to bring about collective action on health, education, voting rights reform, and criminal justice reform. We seek to educate student leaders, activate local youth voting blocs, and offer people who are less informed about the need to reform by examining: legal rights, voter suppression, theories of oppression, and history of racism in America through the Black American lens. Our goals are to: organize with other colleges and universities that share our passion for racial justice, mobilize as a collective on a revived Freedom Ride to Washington D.C, and challenge government officials per discussion reform in areas of education, healthcare, voting rights and criminal justice. The Winter Leadership Institute at SJSU will provide this opportunity for students and student leaders at SJSU. It is modeled on the Dillard Summer Leadership Institute held in at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA in August, 2021. The goal is to establish an action plan to engage student leaders and community members across the country in a movement that culminates in Washington D.C. to demand justice now. We will educate and engage people of all ages from different backgrounds based on the teachings of the Freedom Riders, SNCC, Core, Urban League, and other Civil Rights leaders. This project seeks to provide youth with resources to educate and mobilize peers while networking with policymakers. We will collaborate with our team to create a list of demands based on the lived experiences and voices of disadvantaged communities. Finally, we are going to enact change through advocating for policy to protect our voting rights and eradicate racial injustices. This project has five phases: a Leadership Institute at Dillard University, Community Mobilization, including leadership institutes like the SJSU Winter Institute, the Freedom Ride, a Rally in Washington D.C., and Direct Action at Home. To fund our three-day Winter Leadership Institute; mobilize and rally SJSU students to D.C. to advocate for racial justice and equity in front of congressional leaders. The first major component is educational. This winter, SJSU students and advisors are organizing a three-day Winter Leadership Institute at San Jose State University. We are designing a curriculum discussing several topics (stated above) that would be promoted at other universities and campuses in the U.S. The second component is a Freedom Ride in June 2022, stopping in many of the same locations as the 1961 Freedom Riders, The Ride Revived is planned to end in Washington, DC where a collective voice of youth activists will demand change, meeting with political leaders. The College of Health and Human Sciences advances health and well-being for all, through preparing effective practitioners in occupational therapy, nutrition, physical therapy, social work, nursing, public health, recreation and audiology. Experience with diverse communities through short-term study abroad courses in the Faculty-Led Program enhances the ability to be an effective employee. Students have the opportunity to learn, interact and collaborate with others who speak different languages and see the world differently. Students learn to think and understand with a global perspective and gain a deeper appreciation of cultural differences. At SJSU we teach our students how to think in more complex ways and international study gives them a lived experience of exactly that. Because of this, studying abroad promotes greater marketability and employment opportunities, and also allows students to become interconnected with rich cultures and history. Faculty-Led Programs offer students the chance to visit a global destination and study onsite with SJSU faculty and a cohort of peers for a short 3-week period of time while meeting locals and doing credit coursework. A majority of the programs satisfy upper-division general education courses and some also offer major-specific courses. Why are we raising the money? Did you know that San Jose State University is a Hispanic Serving Institution serving over 26% Latinos of its 30,000 plus student population? The cost of attendance at SJSU is $29,058 which is 52% of a Latino family’s annual income! The cost of a college education continues to rise and is a barrier for our SJSU Latino students. In addition, Latino students face unique circumstances like family emergency situations, lack of feeling connected to campus, and financial stress push students to work longer hours and spend less time being full-time students. These circumstances extend the college experience for many, or for some are the reasons why students discontinue their education. With over 26% Latino student population, our students are the second-lowest retained student population. The Latino Alumni Network’s Solution - Support students with scholarships and community Established in 2011, the SJSU Latino Alumni Network exists to provide financial support and retention for Latino students and create a community for SJSU Latino alumni and students to promote professional and personal growth. In 2018, LAN awarded its first two scholarships and has supported 12 students in total. On average, LAN receives over 100 applications each year from qualified applicants with financial need. LAN has a five-year plan in place to raise $50,000 to establish an endowment while continuing to increase the number of scholarships it awards to students each year. This conference is a tremendous opportunity for Doctoral of Audiology (AuD) students at SJSU to obtain valuable resources, networking opportunities, and further audiology education. Help Moss Landing Marine LAb students raise funds for student scholarships! Moss Landing Marine Lab Who are we? We are the graduate students at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). MLML and San José State University administer the Master of Science in Marine Science program for California State Universities in northern and central California, which is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both education and research. Our marine operations department, active research diving program, and state of the art equipment allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety of disciplines including: marine ecology; the biology of seaweeds, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds, and mammals; oceanography and marine geology; chemistry and biogeochemistry. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers, and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues. Why are we raising money? Every year, MLML students come together to raise funds for scholarships that support student research. Typically, we organize and run a large, two-day educational fundraising event called the MLML Open House. The goal of this event is to engage members of the public in educational activities and display the research that is made possible by these student scholarships. Timpany Center The Timpany Center is a non-profit educational and therapeutic facility that serves community members through a partnership between San José State University Research Foundation (SJSURF) and Santa Clara County. Originally dedicated in 1979 in memory of Dr. C Russell Timpany, former County Superintendent of Schools, the center was designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Today, the center continues the vision of Dr. Timpany with a mission to provide — through multi-agency involvement and San José State University student service learning — inclusive aquatic and land-based activities that target the promotion of physical health and wellness in individuals with disabilities, obesity, and/or advanced age from the greater Santa Clara County community. Timpany Center has not been immune to the financial and programmatic effects of the global pandemic. As we look forward to a time where we can all meet in person, we will continue to offer remote classes and activities to keep our members healthy and safe. Our plan is to demolish the current play structure and design a new yard that both promotes inclusivity and enhances the quality of care and instruction offered to the Toddler Lab students. Help Akbayan SJSU fund this year's virtual PCN! Akbayan SJSU Akbayan SJSU is a nonprofit, student-run Pilipino American organization at SJSU. In the Filipino language, Akbayan means “Embracing in Friendship.” For over 42 years, our organization has developed different programs and events under our four pillars of academics, social, community and political, and cultural. Because of our professional and organized execution of events and programs, Akbayan is one of the largest organizations on campus with about 400 active general members. In addition to facilitating a safe and welcoming space for a diverse population, we continuously give back to the Pilipino American community. As a student organization, we have developed a mentorship program that aims to pair members with other students as mentors to ensure success and a high retention rate in our demographic. As a cultural and social organization, we educate our members through workshops specializing in the arts as well as our history. Our organization’s true purpose is to encourage students to “embrace in friendship” while facing the struggles of academia, mental health, and cultural identity. The Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) is a program that has been a tradition for many Pilipino American organizations throughout the United States. For SJSU, this is our 33rd anniversary and we are determined to carry out this well-loved tradition despite COVID-19. Traditionally, PCN takes place as on-stage production that showcases our members through the expressive arts, including cultural, contemporary, & modern dances; choir & band; tech & props; and acting & scriptwriting. However, considering social distancing guidelines PCN has been adapted to accommodate for everyone’s safety and participation. The project team now includes positions such as illustrators - who will be drawing a comic book to share the story of PCN, as a supplement to acting. As well as sound engineers, who will be helping our band and choir aspect by capturing, layering, and mixing each cast member’s separate track(s).Our virtual production has garnered a cast of over 70 people who have shown a strong passion and dedication for this program as they believe we can still have an important impact on the community. Our community members are illustrating comic book panels as a way to convert the imagery of the story we are aiming to tell this year. All of our illustrators are being paid within their commission and a proportion of your donation will go towards their commissions. Additionally, our sound engineer is also being paid within their commission and a proportion of your donation will go toward their commission.All the proceeds made through this program go directly back to the organization to continue a legacy of giving back to our community. Help the SJSU Robotics team design and build their rover! SJSU Robotics Club The SJSU Robotics Team is a student-driven, multi-disciplinary team with an emphasis in planetary rover design. Our main goal is to use the skills we have obtained in our academic coursework to further the boundaries of what can be achieved in the field of robotics. Since 2013, our team has evolved from a club focused on small projects into a competition-oriented team, participating in the NASA's RASC-AL RoboOps Competition in the past and currently the Mars Society's University Rover Challenge (URC). The competition requires designing, constructing and controlling a planetary rover with the objective of helping astronauts on Mars. The rover must be able to test soil and rocks for any indication of life, autonomously traverse over rough, mountainous desert terrain, and use its arm to perform tasks such as turning levers, carrying objects, flipping switches, and typing on a keyboard. This year, SJSU Robotics will not be able to make it to the Mars Society’s University Rover Challenge due to COVID restrictions but still plans on making it’s rover to practice their skills and help with recruitment next semester. The rover must be finished by May 2021 so that the senior designers are still a part of this project and this rover will help the next team when they re-enter the 2022 University Rover Challenge (URC). Help CommUniverCity fund educational take-home kits! CommUniverCity CommUniverCity is raising money for enrichment projects that support local community members of all ages in San Jose. In current times, while everyone is learning from home, donations are critically needed now for educational kits to send home to families with children. The kits are designed to enhance hands-on learning opportunities to address today’s challenging schooling needs in subjects like science and the environment, home gardening of healthy foods, and community wealth creation. CommUniverCity educational kits are unique because they are created by SJSU students as part of college courses taught by their professors. The resulting kits provide an enriching, experiential learning opportunity for everyone involved, along with a special connection to the SJSU students who put the educational kits together. Each year, CommUniverCity spearheads an average of 50 of these varying enrichment projects to support its mission of promoting a “college going” culture and instilling a desire for lifelong learning. However, in present times with everyone learning online, projects are being upended. This has resulted in a sudden increase in the number of educational kits needed to send home to children and their families. Materials and supplies for take home kits vary by project, but some examples include interactive board games developed by SJSU students to learn about science and the environment, as well as supplies and materials for growing healthy foods. Donations are also needed to replenish the supply of our popular CommUniverCity t-shirts, which participants earn for being a part of our projects. Even in the current times, SJSU students and community participants still proudly wear our established and recognizable t-shirts during remote online CommUniverCity outreach activities, as well as children and families when learning from home. CommUniverCity’s model originated with an idea that bringing the collective resources of major institutions together to bear on local issues, that the potential for sustainable and meaningful change would be great. We help build community by engaging residents and students to participate in projects that accomplish resident-led goals. CommUniverCity launched in 2005 to engage students in solving real-life neighborhood issues; and in turn, residents benefit from expertise of faculty who can address issues faced by residents. Although we could not gather in-person for the previous two competitions during the summer of 2020, SAE International took the event virtual, allowing our team to participate in all three static events. Spartan Racing was 1 of 12 teams who took 1st for the business presentation event where we were given the challenging scenario of finding the best path forward for a racing company “Spartan Racing” who had to make a drastic cut of 90% to their R&D budget for the upcoming year. We also did very well in our cost and design events. At the beginning of COVID-19, our team transitioned to a fully-online team; we used Slack and google drive to communicate and zoom to continue holding our weekly meetings and seminars for our members. With the help of our advisor and engineering department, we were able to get some access to on-campus resources, allowing us to continue building our car. All SAE International teams that registered for last season will be able to use the car they originally intended to go to competition with since the majority of universities had to close at the beginning of this year. Therefore, we are all in on manufacturing and continuing progress for the current season and upcoming competitions! With strict social distancing and covid-19 safety guidelines in place, we are about 2 months away from having our car on the ground! This means we will need to secure the last of our funding for critical parts, sensors, driver gear, testing day funding, and support to attend the competitions in-person next semester per SAE International’s plan for the static portion of the competitions pending conditions.

These funds will allow the Department of Environmental Studies at SJSU to substantially increase our effectiveness and outreach in the realm of Environmental Justice, and they will help make our Master of Science degree accessible to a wider range of students. One of our current students, Ashari Taylor Watson, intends to finish her research and graduate by December 2020, but cannot do so unless funding is identified to support her work. Ashari's research focuses on the intersection of digital equity and environmental literacy in African-American youth of low-income communities. She is conducting her research and volunteering as the STEM program instructor for the Leonard J. Metzler branch of the Oakland Boys and Girls Club, where she bridges the gaps between access to technology, green technology, and environmental justice. In addition to Ashari, Heidi Giancola, Claudia Damiano, Raji Rajesh, Alycia Ellington and Allison Solis are all initiating research on justice in the food system, including urban farms and gardens, educational farms, and commercial farmworker working conditions. Guadalupe Franco and Diana Saavedra are studying how city climate and infrastructure planning include and affects underrepresented constituencies. Help turn the Hammer Theatre into a live streaming event space! Here at the Hammer Theatre, we are missing our performing groups and patrons, our students and volunteers. We face an uncertain time, with the gathering of audiences prohibited for the foreseeable future. For the moment, our stage is dark. But we can help keep live performing arts alive by reinventing the way we deliver performances. Instead of asking audiences to gather at the Hammer, we plan to bring entertainment to the home by investing in technology: a studio quality, multi-camera video setup that will allow us to livestream events. We’ve already had success with an experiment in live streaming. The shelter-in-place order in March, prohibited us from hosting an audience for our scheduled performances by Mummenschanz. However, the troupe graciously permitted us to livestream their performance via the fixed camera mounted on our balcony. After watching that stream, critic Lily Janiak of the San Francisco Chronicle raved, “The lights on that HD camera looked so gorgeous I frequently had the illusion — especially with all Mummenschanz’s shapes and colors — that I was watching one of those wordless shorts at the top of a bill with a full-length Pixar feature.“ To keep the Hammer and live performing arts alive until we can welcome you back to the theatre, we need your help. Streaming art forms like theatre, dance, and concerts will require multiple cameras, a switcher, cables and other technology -- as well as training our production staff and SJSU students to become video technicians. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) and San José State University administer the Master of Science in Marine Science program for California State Universities in northern and central California, which is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both education and research. Our marine operations department, active research diving program, and state of the art equipment allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety of disciplines including: marine ecology; the biology of seaweeds, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds, and mammals; oceanography and marine geology; chemistry and biogeochemistry. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers, and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues. Why are we raising money? Every year, MLML students come together to raise funds for scholarships that support student research. Typically, we organize and run a large, two-day educational fundraising event called Open House. The goal of this event is to engage members of the public in educational activities and display the research that is made possible by these student scholarships. To minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we had no choice but to cancel this year’s Open House despite extensive work preparing for it. Last year’s event attracted almost 5,000 visitors and raised over $10,000 towards student scholarships. We are the 2020 Vamos a Oaxaca student organization, a diverse group of 18 undergrad and graduate students from San Jose State University (SJSU), all studying different majors and backgrounds organized under the leadership of Dr. Kathleen Roe. Our organization is the result of 15 years of relationships based on mutual respect, wellness, and trust between two communities: the artisan families of the Ecoalebrijes Association of Arrazola in Oaxaca, Mexico and a group of enthusiastic SJSU students and faculty partners. The result: success! After all these years, over 300 SJSU students have participated in Vamos a Oaxaca exchange, one of the most precious and enriching traditions of our school. During the “intercambio” (exchange) a group of students will live with host families in the pueblo of Arrazola and work with the local leaders of the community to promote health, sustainability, and wellness. This is an opportunity for us to spend our spring break intentionally involved in a week of learning, service, and cultural immersion. Previous travelers consistently say that their lives were transformed in just one week and, with your help, we will continue this tradition one more time! NSSLHA’s campaign aims to send at least 7 students to the annual California Speech-Language & Hearing Association (CSHA) convention in Anaheim, CA. It’s where 3,000 SLPs, SLPAs, AuDs, students and other professionals gather to share expertise, learn and connect. Students will engage in activities that contribute to their professional development. These include: Seminars discussing the newest technology, therapy approaches and research findings Opportunity to participate in hands-on labs to apply learned skills Gain knowledge on: cultural and linguistic diversity, Language and literacy, Professional issues, Special populations, Swallowing disorders, and much more! Spartan Autonomous Vehicle In the last century, California’s Santa Clara Valley has experienced an enormous growth in population from 100,000 in 1920 to an estimated 2 million in 2020. Unfortunately, mass human occupation in the valley has resulted in severe damage to the natural habitats of thousands of native species. The focus of this project are two anadromous species of fish in the Guadalupe River: Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. In recent years, fish populations across California have seen significant decline not only from human induced catastrophe, but also due to region wide drought, a loss of freshwater, and poor ocean conditions. The Spartan ASV Team is an interdisciplinary group of twelve students across the mechanical, computer and electrical engineering departments at San Jose State University. Our team will develop a fully autonomous surface vehicle capable of photographing and documenting the GPS location of these endangered fish as they are encountered. This design will incorporate a multitude of sensors and microcontrollers to accomplish fully autonomous navigation in all river conditions. The Spartan ASV Team has partnered with the South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition (SBCCC), a non-governmental organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of healthy waterways in the Santa Clara Valley. Every year during the spawning season, volunteers work tirelessly to document and count the number of fish returning. Reclaimed areas of the watershed are observed for activity and documented efforts are used for community outreach. The challenges faced by the SBCCC include the monitoring and preservation of waterways that cover an estimated 779 square miles of small creeks and rivers. In 2018 alone, more than 30 volunteers spent over 300 volunteer hours on such efforts. With hard work, innovation, and passion for a drive to sustainability, this team can prevent two more species from being added to the list of the hundreds of others disappearing every month. Help the Design Build Fly team build their competition airplane and travel to Wichita, KS! Design Build Fly at SJSU is a team of engineering students that have come together to design and build a radio-controlled airplane for competition. Design Build Fly is an annual competition held by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for universities around the world to apply their knowledge outside the classroom. Each year 110 universities are selected after the proposal stage to compete in the fly-off either in Wichita, KS or Prescott, AZ. This year our task is to build a plane that emulates a charter style propeller-driven aircraft that can carry simulated passengers and luggage while also having the capability to tow a banner behind the aircraft. Our goal for this year is to secure a position in the fly off and do our best to win. We are raising funds now to help pay for parts, tools, and travel to the competition. As part of any project, we must consider any and every cost involved. Our primary need now is for parts, things like construction materials (Balsa wood, carbon fiber, and HD foam) and electronics. As a team, we have made a goal to finish a prototype by the beginning of the next semester, a lofty yet very important goal of creating the best airplane we can make. Our team has been working around the clock to begin the preliminary design that will allow us to iterate and refine our design and knowledge as engineers. The secondary goal for the funds raised is to help with getting us to the competition and lodging in Wichita, KS. As most know, travel in the 21st century isn’t cheap and students aren’t the most equipped to spend the amount of money required to take a 4 day trip to another state. Fifty is an important milestone for the Africana, Asian American, Chicano, and Native American (AAACNA) Studies Center. Why 50? Because it marks this year’s anniversary of many of the university services that would define Ethnic Studies at San José State University. At SJSU we were the first CSU campus to create what would become the Education Opportunity Program, the defining Chicano Commencement that came about as a result of students walk-out in 1968, and the first graduate program in Mexican American studies. The AAACNA Studies Center would follow in the footsteps of many of these programs by visionary thinkers who wanted to ensure that voices from underrepresented communities were heard. And now, fifty represents the “$50K and Beyond” campaign for the AAACNA Studies Center Endowment to support the Center’s important work. The AAACNA Studies Center provides resources for teaching and research and hosts year-round multicultural exhibits and public programs related to its four collections in Africana, Asian American, Chicano, and Native American studies. Its establishment in 1982, via the Chicano Studies Research Center, was a significant achievement as was its work over the years to build its collections and host exhibits and public programs. Our curriculum, programming, and scholarship examines, explores, and engages the intellectual traditions within the African Diaspora from multiple perspectives—historical, cultural, philosophical, political, social, and theoretical—in service to its students and society. The African American Studies Student Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial support to those undergraduate students majoring in African American Studies at San José State University. The scholarship fund will allow for undergraduate students enrolled full-time, with at least 60 credit hours earned and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to be awarded $250 per Fall and Spring semester (minimum) for no more than one academic year. The Department of African American Studies is raising money to establish, build and maintain a scholarship fund to support those students majoring in African American Studies. The department’s goal is to provide funds to support students’ acquisition of texts and other peripheral materials necessary for the successful completion of coursework toward a degree in African American Studies. School of Music and Dance The University Dance Theater, SJSU Dance Program’s advanced performing ensemble, has been selected to perform at Jacob’s Pillow this August. A tremendous honor and opportunity for the dance majors and faculty members that will travel to this historic dance site to present the work And Suddenly We See, choreographed by Professors Heather Cooper and Raphael Boumaïla. The students involved have dedicated a full year’s work into And Suddenly We See. The creation and rehearsal process began in August of 2018. Students rehearsed three hours per day, first performed it in November, presented it at the American College Dance Association conference, performed it again for the UDT season in April, will continue rehearsing this summer, and will then perform it on August 22 at Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts. This campaign will raise the funds necessary to pay for flights and accommodations. Being selected is a major triumph for SJSU’s Dance Program. The work was first selected for the West Region’s American College Dance Association Gala performance and was later selected by the Jacob’s Pillow committee (out of approximately 5,000 dances) to be performed as a part of the Inside Out Concert. Jacob’s Pillow has been called “the dance center of the Nation” (The New York Times) and the “hub and mecca of dancing” (TIME Magazine). It exists to support dance creation, presentation, education, and preservation; and to engage and deepen public appreciation and support for dance. An important site for national and international dance, the property was declared a National Historic Landmark District by the federal government as “an exceptional cultural venue that holds value for all Americans.” It is the only dance entity in the U.S. to receive this honor. When presenting Jacob’s Pillow with the National Medal of Arts, President Barack Obama said “Thousands of people, of all ages, from across the United States and the world, have Jacob’s Pillow to thank for opening their horizons to dance.” The University Dance Theater provides dance majors with incredible performing opportunities, rigorous training, and first-hand experience of what it is like to work in a dance company. Help fund the Joseph Roach Memorial Scholarship! Why are we raising this money? Joseph ventured to Silicon Valley and SJSU to study engineering because he wanted to have a positive impact on humanity. He was a dreamer and someone who loved his fellow human beings without reservation and without condition. He believed that he could make a positive difference by creating, and he saw engineering as his path to constructive creativity. At the prime of his life, he was struck by mental illness. In February 2017, Joseph’s family and friends became aware that he was experiencing strong hallucinations and anxiety. He moved back to his family home in Glendale, where he was diagnosed with some symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Joseph immediately began treatment. In a short while, he worked his way back to most of his previous endeavors. He landed a job with a young tech support company and planned to return to his studies to complete his engineering degree. During the last few weeks of his life, symptoms associated with his mental illness resumed. He had a tough day at work, on Monday, November 6, 2017. The next morning, he had a nice breakfast with his mom. He explained he would be spending the night with friends and then left calmly for work. As his family describes: We’ve been able to piece together that he spent at least a day on a beautiful, quiet beach in Ventura. We’re guessing the beach was a recent favorite of his, maybe found during his work travels in the area. The following day, November 9th, he took his last swim. Early that same morning back at the house, his little sister found a goodbye letter from him. They contacted the police, and the search began. Tragically, his remains were found five weeks later; the family received DNA confirmation five weeks after that. He was 25 years old. The Joseph A. Roach Memorial Scholarship Fund will support students living with mental illness and/or brain injuries. The Fund was established to: Honor Joseph’s memory Provide tangible financial support and care for students with mental illness The Fund will demonstrate to them that students with mental illness are not alone, that the community believes—and is invested—in them. The Fund will reduce the financial stress of college for students supported, freeing more energy for their studies and for the challenges associated with mental illness. There is currently no funding explicitly supporting students with mental illness available at SJSU. Stigma and stress are two of the most significant obstacles facing those with mental illness, and the fund aims to knock each of those down a bit. The Fund is intentionally very inclusive. Full-time enrolled SJSU students with a formal diagnosis, regardless of the illness or cause/type of brain injury, with at least a 2.0 GPA will be qualified to apply. It is our desire that the Fund contributes to building societal awareness of some of the other tough challenges facing those with mental illness. Those awareness areas include: general public mental health awareness, basic contributing factors, currently-emerging risk factors, diagnostic challenges, and care/support challenges and resources. How can you help? In order for this Fund to give as much as possible to support students with mental illness and/or brain injuries, we need to raise a substantial amount of funds. We ask that you please give to this cause—our ask is $50 per year for three years or a one-time contribution of $150. (The scholarship will begin giving out funds in three years.) But any donation of any amount is welcome. In addition, we ask that you share this with your family, friends and broader social and professional networks. Mental illness is experienced by millions of individuals, their families and friends across the country. Suicide rates for people in their late teens and early twenties are currently rising at alarming rates. And yet the level of stigma and misunderstanding is extraordinary. Only by sharing information and acting together can we change this. This Fund is a small but significant way to do just that.

When Steve Suarez, the founder and campaign lead for SpotMe Solutions first transferred to SJSU he discovered parking was a hot topic of discussion among students. He came up with the idea in his Total Quality Management class and continued on with the idea after winning the best innovation in the class. He later presented the idea to the main startup accelerator and incubator at SJSU, IDEA Lab. He soon started getting noticed and respected among peers after being named a finalist in on-campus competitions and securing a signed contract with SJSU. Our mission is to improve commuters’ parking experience. Team Objectives: To purchase initial hardware equipment to begin beta-test To pay for one day of testing our hardware in a laboratory for safety Create a community of users through our online presence by raising funding to do marketing. This engine will be the one used in the rocket that DREAM plans to launch for competitions like the Base 11 Space Challenge. Help Akbayan SJSU fund their 31st annual Pilipino Cultural Night! Akbayan SJSU Akbayan SJSU is the nonprofit student-ran Pilipino American organization on campus. In the Filipino language, Akbayan means “Embracing in Friendship.” For over 42 years, our organization has developed different programs and events under our four pillars of academics, social, community and political, and cultural. Because of our professional and organized execution of events and programs, Akbayan is one of the largest organizations on campus with over 650 active general members. In addition to facilitating a safe and welcoming space for a diverse population, we continuously give back to the Pilipino American community. As a student organization, we’ve developed a mentorship program that aims to pair members with other students as mentors to ensure success and a high retention rate in our demographic. As a cultural and social organization, we educate our members through workshops specializing in the arts as well as our history. Our organization’s true purpose to encourage students to “embrace in friendship” while facing the struggles of academia, mental health, and cultural identity. The Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) is a program that has been a tradition for many Pilipino American organizations throughout the United States. For SJSU, this is our 31st anniversary. For two nights, PCN showcases our members through the expressive arts, including and not limited to cultural, contemporary, & modern dances; choir & band; tech & props; and acting & scriptwriting. In addition, we expose our members to opportunities in marketing, public relations, graphic design, and financial planning. Last year alone, we had a cast of about 200 members with two nights sold out to a total of 900 people at the Santa Clara Convention Center. We also added a third matinée show with 380 tickets sold. As the success of our student production rises, we require more funding to attribute to a larger cast and audience for this year’s PCN. This year, our venue is secured at the Morris Dailey Auditorium on San Jose State University and we are projecting roughly 200 cast members. All the proceeds made through this program go directly back to the organization to continue a legacy of giving back to our community. Vamos a Oaxaca We are the 2019 Vamos a Oaxaca student organization, a diverse group of 16 undergraduate and graduate San Jose State University (SJSU) students from different majors and backgrounds. Our organization is the result of a 14-year relationship based on mutual respect, wellness, and trust between two communities, the artisan families of the Ecoalebrijes Association of Arrazola in Oaxaca, Mexico and a group of enthusiastic SJSU students and faculty partners. The result: success! After all these years, over 275 SJSU students have participated in Vamos a Oaxaca exchange, one of the most precious and enriching traditions of our school. During the “intercambio” (exchange) a group of students will live with host families in the pueblo of Arrazola and work with the local leaders of the community to promote health, sustainability, and wellness. This is an opportunity for us to spend our spring break intentionally involved in a week of learning, service, and cultural immersion. Previous travelers consistently say that their lives were transformed in just one week and, with your help, we will continue this tradition one more time! When Jasmine Sanchez, the founder and campaign lead for Vessel Athletics, first got into running she faced a problem every time she wanted to bring water with her during her runs. Every water wearable product out on the market today is either too heavy, too flimsy and uncomfortable to wear or not hands-free. She later found out that this is a common problem that many runners, bikers, hikers, frequent walkers, and others face which is how the idea for Vessel Athletics was born a year ago! Our mission is to create a better water wearable and athletic wear top brand that will change the way people hydrate so our users can train and compete at their highest efficiency. SPARTAN Superway The SPARTAN Superway is a long-term research initiative at San Jose State University to establish solar powered automated rapid transit ascendant network (“SPARTAN”) systems for urban environments. Since its inception in 2012 by professor Burford “Buff” Furman with Ron Swenson of The International Institute of Sustainable Transportation (INIST), more than 200 students, mentors and faculty have done extensive research, published a major study, written numerous publications, produced functional prototypes of key subsystems, and established an international alliance of universities and industry collaborators on the pathway to commercialization. Each year students that participate in the program are exposed to hands-on manufacturing, designing, programming and the current meta of renewable energy. Most importantly, students get to work in various teams and sub-groups with an engineer in the industry, make formal presentations, build relationships with various companies, and learn how to properly network. Aside from gaining invaluable industry experience, students who participate in the Spartan Superway get to contribute directly toward solving a real-world issue in our local community. Most motor vehicles (even electric vehicles, indirectly) depend on finite polluting fossil fuel sources, but The SPARTAN Superway is truly sustainable in the sense of exclusively using renewable energy sources. Additionally, most mechanized transit modes compete for the same space, imposing congestion and safety hazards upon the public, endangering pedestrians, bicyclists, etc. The SPARTAN Superway will free the streets for citizens to live and thrive in. Furthermore, public transit is inefficient and costly and does not provide adequate mobility for the economically disadvantaged or handicapped. The spartan Superway is clean, convenient, accessible on demand and provides mobility suitable for the entire community. Lastly, pollution from internal combustion engines disproportionately impacts communities of lower socioeconomic status. The SPARTAN Superway operates with clean energy and with low-cost stations, it can reach all parts of the community. Accomplishing all of these things would not be possible without support from alumni, friends and family like yourself. Help San Jose State open the Spartan Food Pantry on campus! Food insecurity/hunger affects many college students nationwide. With the high costs of living in the Bay Area, SJSU students are experiencing food insecurity at rates higher than the national average. The Student Hunger Fund provides direct support to students in need, allowing them to focus on academics and co-curricular life with fewer worries. This fall we plan to open a permanent Spartan Food Pantry on campus. This comprehensive center will provide grocery-style access to non-perishable foods, fresh produce, and toiletries. We need your help to make this happen for our students! Please make a gift today to ensure that we are able to ease this burden for many of our hard-working students. SJSU offers many types of food resources from cooking demonstration classes, community garden, temporary food shelves, and a once a month mobile food pantry in our events center. The biggest program, the Just In Time (monthly mobile food pantry) has averaged 500 students each time. Monday, September 10th was the first of the 2018-2019 academic year (just four weeks into the school year) and we had 495 students come through the line in under 2 hours! Hunger is real on campus. The Just In Time monthly food distribution program serves so many, but it's limited to serving just once a month. Many students cannot attend due to timing and some choose to skip class so they have food. We don’t want to put them in that position. The Spartan Food Pantry will be the first full service, staffed, walk-in pantry offering perishable goods, fresh produce, and refrigerated goods at SJSU. This will be open multiple days of the week with hours that are more flexible to a student’s schedule. The American Society of Civil Engineers(ASCE) Student Chapter holds annual conferences to bring together students from ASCE Student Chapters throughout a geographic area that extends from Fresno, CA to Reno, NV. The region also includes member of ASCE Student Chapters in both Canada and China. The SJSU chapter is a group Civil Engineering students and this year we have take on the important project to plan, coordinate and host the conference as the official event committee for the annual ASCE mid-pacific student conference. Our committee’s responsibilities include: planning the 3-Day conference for universities from the region and providing the facilities for the students to participate in the event. Our Annual Mid-pacific regional Student Conferences allow future civil engineers gain valuable hands-on experience by competing in events such as the concrete canoe competition. In addition to the experiential education, students interact with peers, industry professionals, companies, and faculty from institutions so that they can develop professional skills and build long-term friendships. With the help from sponsors, our ASCE student chapters of San Jose State University will be able to achieve the goals set forth for the upcoming conference. We anticipate that 60% of our income will be funded directly from the schools and students. Your tax-deductible donation will help subsidize the remaining 40% of the necessary supplies, facilities, equipment rentals, and meals for the attendees. The Beethoven Center at SJSU has the opportunity to purchase a unique Beethoven treasure. Can you help us? The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San Jose State University serves as an essential repository for unique and/or rare artifacts related to Beethoven and his time. Located in the King Library, its resources are available to students & faculty at SJSU, and musicians & scholars around the globe. Rarely in the 32-year history of the Beethoven Center have we been offered the opportunity to invest in an artifact of such significant historical value, to maintain its accessibility within the public sphere in perpetuity, and to ensure in the best possible conditions for long-term storage. This unique Beethoven treasure is a significant—potentially extremely significant—discovery: a first edition score of the Seventh Symphony, inscribed by Beethoven to Antonie Brentano, the woman some believe was his “Immortal Beloved.” The seller has agreed to offer this exclusively to the Beethoven Center until the end of December. What makes this offer so important to the Beethoven Center: The inscribed score directly relates to an original manuscript letter maintained in the Center’s collection, written by Beethoven to Franz Brentano, dated February 15, 1817, in which Beethoven mentions sending “several musical works to recall myself to your friendly remembrance.” Beethoven is likely referring this score of his Seventh Symphony. For more information on this letter, click here. Beethoven’s handwritten inscription translates as “For my highly esteemed friend Antonia Brentano from the author.” Many scholars believe that Antonie was Beethoven’s Immortal Beloved. Beethoven completed the 7th Symphony in April 1812, just three months before he wrote his famous letters to her. This particular score was completely unknown until the owner contacted the Beethoven Center last fall, and the inscription has been authenticated by Dr. Michael Ladenburger, former director of the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn. In preparation for the 250th anniversary celebrations in 2020, the Center is looking to acquire more original Beethoven materials for exhibits. This is a rare chance that might not come again. Help us fund our rocket and reach our goal of 100,000 feet! UPDATE (May 2nd): Wow! We reached our goal yesterday. AGAIN. It amazing that through sharing with friends, family, and acquaintances, we were able to reach our stretch goal of $6,000 in the same amount of time as our initial goal! We are just over half way into our campaign, which leaves us with a choice. Either enable a new stretch goal or be happy with what we have. The project cost for this year is $10,000, however, we set a conservative initial crowdfunding goal to be realistic. We have received $2,000 from the College of Engineering for funding, and as such, this leaves us $2,000 left to fully fund the project this year. With this in mind, we are making a final push by setting the campaign goal to $8,000. This final goal will secure project fruition and we have only 14 days left to get there! Our current design configuration and simulations show 200,000 feet is obtainable with our $10,000 fundraising goal. Most professional companies have millions of dollars of investment for similar altitude launches. It would be game changing if we can achieve this altitude and microgravity environment for a mere fraction of the cost. HARP is establishing a new culture for students in the College of Engineering. We are pushing for multiple disciplines within the team, broadening the exposure of the program while emulating a real-world dynamic and multidisciplinary environment. We are currently working on international university collaboration via connections to Kyushu University in Japan. Students participating in HARP are able to combine theoretical knowledge from upper-division courses to collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. Help fund our student scholarships! MLML Graduate Students Who are we? We are the marine science graduate students of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML), which is a department within the Colleges of Sciences at San Jose State University. Our lab serves over 80 Master graduate students from California State Universities in both northern and central California. Why are we raising money? Every year, students organize and run the MLML Open House which is a two-day fundraising event. Students design interactive educational activities, develop short public-friendly lectures and create informational displays about their specific labs. The goal is for visitors to see the research that student scholarships make possible. The event itself is free, which provides local community members from all economic backgrounds the opportunity to participate. Last year’s event attracted over 1,800 visitors and raised more than $4,000 towards student scholarships. Despite this work, not everyone who would like to support student scholarships is able to attend the weekend long event. In addition, the total funds awarded to students through MLML scholarships exceeds $20,500 annually. These scholarship funds are therefore not entirely allocated from Open House despite the large number of attendees to the event. Since Open House is jam-packed with engaging marine science outreach, many visitors and supporters may not be aware of the months in advance of planning or the 12hr days that the MLML students dedicate for the event. This was a great start to making sure they can afford this experience of playing competitive volleyball overseas, but we are still in need of some additional funding. We are the 2018 Vamos a Oaxaca student organization, a diverse group of 22 undergrad and graduate San Jose State University (SJSU) students from different majors and backgrounds organized under the leadership of Dr. Kathleen Roe. Our organization is the result of 14 years of relationships based on mutual respect, wellness, and trust between two communities: the artisan families of the Ecoalebrijes Association of Arrazola in Oaxaca, Mexico and a group of enthusiastic SJSU students and faculty partners. The result: success! After all these years, over 275 SJSU students have participated in Vamos a Oaxaca exchange, one of the most precious and enriching traditions of our school. During the “intercambio” (exchange) a group of students will live with host families in the pueblo of Arrazola and work with the local leaders of the community to promote health, sustainability, and wellness. This is an opportunity for us to spend our spring break intentionally involved in a week of learning, service, and cultural immersion. Previous travelers consistently say that their lives were transformed in just one week and, with your help, we will continue this tradition one more time! With your support, we will be able to explore this host community; dialogue with peers; learn from the elders, adults, teens, and children in our host families; and engage in praxis (reflection-action-reflection) on issues of social justice and community change. Help Akbayan SJSU fund their 30th annual Pilipino Cultural Night! Akbayan SJSU Akbayan SJSU is the nonprofit student-ran Pilipino American organization on campus. In the Filipino language, Akbayan means “Embracing in Friendship.” For over 40 years, our organization has developed different programs and events under our four pillars of academics, social, community and political, and cultural. Because of our professional and organized execution of events and programs, Akbayan is one of the largest organizations on campus with over 650 active general members. In addition to facilitating a safe and welcoming spaces for a diverse population, we continuously give back to the Pilipino American community. As a student organization, we’ve developed a mentorship program that aims to pair members with other students as mentors to ensure success and a high retention rate in our demographic. As a cultural and social organization, we educate our members through workshops specializing in the arts as well as our history. Our organization’s true purpose to encourage students to “embrace in friendship” while facing the struggles of academia, mental health, and cultural identity. The Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) is a program that has been a tradition for many Pilipino American organizations throughout the United States. For SJSU, this is our 30th anniversary. For two nights, PCN showcases our members through the expressive arts, including and not limited to cultural, contemporary, & modern dances; choir & band; tech & props; and acting & scriptwriting. In addition, we expose our members to opportunities in marketing, public relations, graphic design, and financial planning. Last year alone, we had a cast of about 200 members with two nights sold out to a total of 1,000 people at the Hammer Theatre. We had so many people buy tickets that we had to add a third matinée show with 250 tickets sold. As the success of our student production rises, we require more funding to attribute to a larger cast and audience for this year’s PCN. This year, our venue is secured at the Santa Clara Convention Center and we are projecting roughly 250 cast members. All the proceeds made through this program go directly back to the organization to continue a legacy of giving back to our community. SJSU Film Production Society The SJSU Film Production Society (FPS) is producing a short film titled “What Lurks” January 17th to 21st. FPS is a student-run organization with the goal of creating a platform for students to get first-hand experience as filmmakers by producing independent short films two to three times a year. FPS has around 30 attending members this semester, most of them are Radio-Television-Film majors, but we also have members from many other majors such as Animation, Business, Communication, and Theater. This winter, FPS is producing “What Lurks”, written and directed by Justin Lee. Justin Lee is an SJSU student studying Radio, TV, & film with strong experience in art direction, giving all the short films he works on a distinct visual tone. Justin’s scripts often allude to greater social issues which he believes need to be talked about. The production of every short film produced by FPS members is a group effort and crew members have pooled resources over the course of the last semester to create a high production-value short film. We are definitely in a good place to start, but in order for us to reach the level of quality we strive for with our work, we need your help! The money raised by this campaign will be used to cover the various production costs of independent filmmaking including insurance, meals for the crew, props, and more! Because of you, we were able to reach the goal in less than a week which was much quicker than expected. This is an amazing start to helping us replace some equipment in our gym, but lets not stop there! We could still use your help in our quest to be great. Specifically, some additional funding will help us to replace all the mats in the gym, get a new vault runway and overall make our gym a better place to train. With this is mind we are increasing our goal to $8,000 and still have 24 days to get there. Please share our cause with your network and, if you haven't already done so, make your gift today! The 2017 season was one of our most successful years in the program’s history. We won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship and had two gymnasts win individual events at Championships - Haleigh Shepard (vault) and Taylor Chan (floor). Taylor was also selected as the MPSF Freshman of the Year. On top of that, three gymnasts, Katie Won, Rachel Heinl and Taylor, also competed at the NCAA Seattle Regional. We want to continue our tradition of excellence this season, but we need your help so that we can continue to train at the highest level. Maintaining our equipment and facility comes with a big price tag. For example, a springboard that our vaulters need to win championships costs $920. Additionally, our beam team that recorded the second-best score in school history last year needs $250 to re-cover each of our beams and we have three. Lastly, a new set of bars will cost us $4,000. We need your help to get to the next level of great and to continue our tradition of excellence. Every donation to our program, big or small, makes a huge impact on our student-athletes. For many SJSU students, this is their first time out of the country. This tour gives these students the chance to perform in the beautiful venues and share music with peoples from Finland, Latvia, and Estonia, all while enriching their studies and musical experiences. Background: Gary was the best-known industry analyst in EDA (Electronic Design Automation), our small but vital industry. He defined market segments, tracked market share, offered revenue projections, consulted with major EDA providers and their customers, published detailed research reports, and served as a tireless advocate for more efficient ways of designing chips that may have a billion transistors or more. Gary was born in Stockton, California, and he grew up in the San Joaquin Valley. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. After six years of active duty in Vietnam, he embarked on a career in semiconductors working for a variety of companies, including National Electronics, International Rectifier, TRW, Signetics, Telmos, Plessey and LSI Logic. Team Objectives: To develop a forward-thinking team with the skills to be proficient in the many aspects of engineering, business, and society Design and manufacture a safe, reliable, and cost-effective, fully-electric race car Compete in all of the FSAE -Lincoln events for a chance to win outright Give to the community through hosting events, presentations, sponsor support, and racing Project Goals: Raise enough money to complete our objectives Reduce weight and increase reliability of our design Win both FSAE Lincoln and Formula North racing competitions Why are we raising this money? The money will go towards funding the SRE-3 project and its associated logistics. For the car to be manufactured and assembled, we need to purchase raw materials, composites, off-shelf parts, tools, and machining time. In a typical year, the team spends roughly $15k - $20k on materials, and another $15k - $25k on machining time, parts and tools. Competition registration totals around $3,500 each year, but this does not include logistical costs of lodging and transportation for the team and car ($10k - $15k). We rely heavily on the support of our corporate sponsors, and proud donors who are enthusiastic about our team. Women in Aviation at San Jose State University aims to promote relationships within the aviation industry, mentor students seeking aviation-related careers, promote women in the aviation field, and conduct outreach to younger generations. As a support system for the Aviation Department of SJSU, we strive to further the personal, academic, and professional growth of all our members. The purpose of this Crowdfunding Page is to send our members to the 2017 Women in Aviation International Conference in Orlando, Florida. This event is three days that are full of opportunities to get more involved with what’s new in the business and aviation industry. There are dozens of educational sessions, professional development seminars, and keynote speakers that provide insights about the issues facing the business and aviation industry. This conference gives our members the opportunity to connect with aviation industry professionals, meet other aviation students from across the nation, be more effective when hosting outreach programs for middle school and high school students, become inspired and motivated, and most importantly, learn a great deal more about how we, as students and future employees, can benefit the aviation industry. The Spartan Athletic Training Organization needs your help to get to their annual Far West Athletic Training Association Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada! Athletics is a huge part of San Jose State University. Our athletes are the ones that represent us across the United States as they travel for their competitions, but who takes care of those athletes when they are hurt? We athletic trainers and the athletic training students are the ones behind the scenes taking care of SJSU athletes to make sure all of our athletic programs are healthy and fully functioning programs. We are the ones there for the athletes when they need water, when they're sore, when they're rehabbing, or when they just need a shoulder to cry on when they aren’t having the best of days. Now, the athletic training students on campus are in need of support so we can attend the annual Far West Athletic Training Association Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. We want to go to this conference in order to enhance our skills, expand our knowledge, learn new techniques to better help our SJSU athletes, as well as make ourselves more marketable for when we apply for jobs in the athletic training field. Furthermore, we want to network and publicize our SJSU program. We want the United States to know that SJSU has an athletic training program that rocks! Help Moss Landing Marine Laboratories refurnish our student library. During 2016, Moss Landing Marine Labs will be celebrating 50 years of marine science education and research. Science Libraries are essential to the scientific process. Creating a proper space for our students and faculty to conduct research, study and collaborate is not only a priority for us, but an obligation! We are simply unable to refurnish the library without financial support from our Alumni and Friends. The Moss Landing Marine Labs Library is a beautiful space that needs newer and more functional furniture. Please consider making a donation or even sponsoring a chair, a table or a study room!
