African American Studies Student Scholarship Fund

The Department of African American Studies aims to provide students throughout the University with critical, interdisciplinary, and specialized knowledge about African and African American populations and its communities. Our curriculum, programming, and scholarship examines, explores, and engages the intellectual traditions within the African Diaspora from multiple perspectives—historical, cultural, philosophical, political, social, and theoretical—in service to its students and society.

The African American Studies Student Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial support to those undergraduate students majoring in African American Studies at San José State University. The scholarship fund will allow for undergraduate students enrolled full-time, with at least 60 credit hours earned and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to be awarded $250 per Fall and Spring semester (minimum) for no more than one academic year.

The Department of African American Studies is raising money to establish, build and maintain a scholarship fund to support those students majoring in African American Studies.  The department’s goal is to provide funds to support students’ acquisition of texts and other peripheral materials necessary for the successful completion of coursework toward a degree in African American Studies.    

The department has come to represent more than an academic entity to its students. In fact, we believe the department is every bit a part of them as they are a part of it. So, I ask that you do not consider this gesture as simply supporting an academic unit.
