Help support the National Student Speech and Language Hearing Association during this year's Day of Giving. NSSLHA Who are we? Welcome! We are so excited you are here. We are the National Student Speech and Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) at San Jose State University. Our mission is to inspire, empower, and support students in the field of communicative disorders and studies (CD&S) and Audiology. We hope to provide tools and opportunities for SJSU students to navigate their academic career while also preparing for their professional ones. NSSLHA at San Jose State University not only supports a diverse group of students, but also utilizes the strength of the students in the program to serve the San Jose community and advocate for better speech, language and hearing in those with communication disorders and differences. Why are we raising money? We are raising money to support student members to attend a state-wide professional conference as an effort to support our student scholars, inspire more students, and diversify the profession to better serve our communities. The California Speech Language Hearing Association (CSHA) holds an annual conference that targets students and professionals in the field with the latest research and professional education opportunities. This is a great opportunity for students to network, and learn about the many ways our profession contributes to the wellbeing of those with communication disorders and differences. This has traditionally been the venue that brings inspiration and excitement in students to continue with their education into the profession. This will be the first year since the pandemic that we will be able to send our students to this conference, but only with your help! How can you help? Please join us to send our students to the annual professional conference to continue learning about their future career as an SLP or audiologist! The four-day conference will take place in Southern California, with an estimated cost of $1500 per student including conference registration, travel and lodging. Please consider donating on the Day of Giving to support our effort of inspiring students and diversifying our profession. Any amount is appreciated and no amount is too small! Help support the Kay Armstead Center during this year's Day of Giving Kay Armstead Center Who are we? Welcome to the department of Communicative Disorders at SJSU, and its community-serving clinic, the Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD). Located in one of the first Speech-Language Pathology programs in the state of California and the California State University system, the KACCD has long been a destination for persons and families seeking speech-language therapy services for communication and related disorders. The KACCD is a remarkable no-cost-for-services clinic that has supported the San Jose and South Bay areas in providing screening, assessment, and therapy services for clients with communication disorders across the lifespan. For 6 decades, the clinic has provided services to the community while training undergraduate and graduate students to become speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Why are we raising the money? We are raising money to support the final stages of an upgrade to our facilities, materials and equipment in the Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders. KACCD is a jewel in the SJSU crown - your donations allow us to maintain it as an excellent, contemporary facility that supports faculty research, student instruction and training, and to serve clients seeking speech therapy services. Support the Early Childhood Institute during this special Day of Giving These are exciting times for early learning in California! To provide early learning opportunities to more 3- and 4-year-olds, the state is expanding publicly-funded transitional kindergarten and state preschool programs. As SJSU’s hub for early childhood research, training, and advocacy on campus, the Early Childhood Institute (ECI) aims to support the field so that both public and private early childhood programs are delivered using equitable, responsive, and inclusive approaches. ECI is committed to “pushing up” the best practices from the early childhood field into this changing landscape. These practices include play-based learning – a cornerstone of high-quality early childhood programming. Professionals working with children and students preparing for careers in early childhood have questions about changes in the early learning landscape and how these shifts are going to impact their programs, practices, and educational and career paths. The Early Childhood Institute 2023 Professional Meeting is designed to address these questions. Presentations and panel discussions with faculty/researchers, policymakers, and leaders from the field will engage the audience in conversations about the focus and impact of policy changes on both early learning programs and the professionals working with young children. The conference theme will be: Play-based learning in equitable, responsive, and inclusive universal preschool programs. Four types of sessions will be offered to meet the needs of all attendees: 1) Policy sessions will provide an overview of recently adopted policy changes and their impact on current programs for children and for students pursuing related careers. 2) Provider sessions will feature local early learning professionals sharing their use of play-based learning along with innovations they have already been making to address changes in the field. 3) Research sessions will highlight what is known about delivering equitable, responsive, and inclusive play-based opportunities for all children. 4) Networking/Informational sessions will showcase SJSU- and community-based programs and resources designed to support participants’ professional growth.
