Help support Interior Design during this year's Day of Giving
Help support Interior Design during this year's Day of Giving Interior Design Who are we? The Interior Design Student Organization “IDSO” is a non-profit student organization run by elected student peers to organize, facilitate, and support the San Jose State Interior Design Department and student body through communication, events, collaboration, and outreach. We are led by Virginia San Fratello, Diana Seah, and Eleanor Pries. Our goal is to create a strong design community through tutoring, activities, and collaboration with professors, students, and professionals. Why are we raising this money? IDSO partners with Academia and Architectural/Design firms creating opportunities for students to enhance their San Jose State University education. We are seeking to raise funds for students to experience broad exposure to inter-disciplines within the interior design field. Funding our program will facilitate field trips, professional speakers, and supplies. In addition, funds will also go to support the Interior Design Program, and the Annual Senior Design Show in May 2023, which we encourage supporters of our efforts to attend. Though we are seeking funding, we see it as a partnership with design students who need support. Your efforts will assist in transportation, events, programs, and supplies. But more than that, your generosity will build our design community within the program, enrich experiences and add to our academic and professional knowledge. Because design is woven into the fabric of our environment, our senses continue learning when provided with diverse opportunities. It allows students to participate equally, ensuring resources are available to those who need extra support. How can you help? Your generosity and support financially is always appreciated. We understand that our extended friends, family, and professional communities have so much to offer in addition to monetary support. Other ways to support the Interior Design Student Organization: -AIA or IIDA memberships for students Collaborate tours of your architect/design firms, or furniture showrooms -Donate furniture or art to our school studio- student use -Donate a tour bus -Be a presenter, share your experiences! Annual Senior Design Show: -Catering -Photography -Videography -Printing -Master of Ceremonies -Provide staged seating spots -Lighting -Raffle Items -Home Depot gift cards

Reed Magazine
By Reed Magazine
Help support Reed Magazine during this year's Day of Giving.
Help support Reed Magazine during this year's Day of Giving. Reed Magazine Who are we? Reed Magazine is the oldest literary journal in California. Established in 1867—just 10 years after the founding of the CSU here on the San José State University campus—Reed has grown from a mere pamphlet to a stout, award-winning journal that publishes art, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from around the world. Reed Magazine is also a class. A year-long sequence open to graduate students and upper-division English majors, English 133 offers students experience in editing and publishing and all the processes and operations required to produce a yearly anthology: copyediting, design, marketing, promotions, sales, distribution, and management of a robust website and social media presence. Fall semester, students review and select from thousands of submissions the material to include in the journal, which is produced and printed the following spring. Why are we raising the money? Reed is challenged to maintain its considerable forward momentum within the modest budget it is currently afforded. Printing and shipping represent the journal's biggest expenses. Other significant costs include student travel to AWP and operational costs such as funding our contests—which are consistently rated among the industry’s best. Further, we are eager to acquire a state-of-the-art scanner to catalyze our ambitious project to digitize and preserve our entire 156-year archive, to be housed at the MLK Library on campus. How can you help? As costs climb for printing—up 35% since COVID—and for shipping, we must offset those increases by cutting pages (i.e., rejecting more submissions) or restricting the very activities that have helped raise our profile. A gift of $500 could help defray the cost of printing 50 books or support distribution to 100 subscribers. Chief among our successful promotional activities is our participation at AWP, a highlight each spring for Reed editors. Increasing the budget for student travel would expose students to dozens of craft talks and panels and hundreds of actively publishing authors, editors, agents, independent presses, and fellowship and grant opportunities. A gift of $250 could help send three student editors to this year’s conference in Seattle. Finally, consistent with its standing among the most competitive contests among literary journals, Reed awards prizes of up to $1,333 to winners of its annual contests. A gift of $100 could finance the Emerging Voices Contest, which encourages local high school writers and artists to publish their work.

Library Research Scholars
By Library Research Scholars
Help support the Library Research Scholars during this year's Day of Giving.
Help support the Library Research Scholars during this year's Day of Giving. Library Research Scholars Meet Eleanor, Inaya, and Elham, the 2022/23 Library Research Scholars! All three are undergraduate students who applied to join SJSU King Library’s intensive year-long paid experience to expand their research skills by conducting a research project in their fields of study. The three Library Research Scholars were matched with librarian mentors, Andrew, Michael, and Anne Marie, and every week together they attend cohort meetings to learn how to explore their research questions, search, evaluate and organize sources, and implement various research methodologies. By the end of the program, each student will have developed a scholarly product that will be published in the SJSU's institutional repository. The three scholars also have the opportunity to present their work at SJSU's Annual Student Research Competition. The Library Research Scholars program (LRSP) costs $7,000 per student. This amount allows the library to fund one additional student to participate in this impactful, paid, year-long program and produce a scholarly output in support of their academic career and development. The SJSU Library wants to ensure more opportunities for students to get access to this outstanding and highly competitive program. Last year’s acceptance rate was less than 5%. Please consider donating today to support this impactful program next year and to help us expand the program so more students can benefit from the Library Research Scholars experience. Below are three testimonials from previous Library Research Scholars, explaining the impact the program had on them. Here are Ricardo’s, Lindsay’s, and Saniyah’s stories. “I have learned so many techniques that wouldn’t otherwise have been offered to most undergraduate students,” said Ricardo Pimentel, ‘19-’20 scholar. “The most valuable skill is navigating the web to find exactly what pieces of information I need.” “It’s been amazing because I’ve worked with experienced librarians that help me build up my research skills,” said Lindsay Cutler, ‘19-’20 scholar. “And, it was the best way to explore a variety of topics across multiple disciplines.” “This program provided me the flexibility alongside an experienced and supportive faculty mentor and a team of librarians happy and willing to help every step of the way,” said Saniyah Ghoghari, the ‘20-’21 Regina M. Legard Fellow Scholar. “I am much more confident, knowledgeable, and inspired as an independent research scholar.”

Philosophy
By College Humanties & Arts
Help support the Philosophy department during this year's Dy of Giving!
Help support the Philosophy department during this year's Dy of Giving! College Humanties & Arts We’re the SJSU Department of Philosophy. You may know us best from the classes we teach that help SJSU undergraduate and graduate students think well and deeply about questions of enduring importance, understanding reason and passions, logic and empathy, examining the assumptions that shape how they see the world, and honing their skills at defending – and challenging – their own points of view. These are useful skills in a variety of work settings, not to mention tools for living a good human life. What you might not know is that we’re not just teaching philosophy – we’re doing philosophy, and teaching our students how to do it. Our work takes the form of books and scholarly articles, but also includes op-eds, conference presentations, participation in working groups, and public-facing philosophy events. We’re sharing our work in all these ways because we know critical thinking, ethical sensitivity, and the ability to pursue hard questions about our world and place in it can make the world better for everyone. You can help! Your donation will support honoraria for visiting speakers who engage our students in cutting edge philosophical questions, prizes that honor our students’ achievement, small grants for students and faculty to cover the costs of travel to conferences and workshops where they can share their research and broaden their networks, and funding for public-facing events where students and faculty collaborate to bring philosophy that matters to a wider audience.

Center on Ethics
By SJSUCenterOnEthics
Help support the Center on Ethics during this year's Day of Giving.
Help support the Center on Ethics during this year's Day of Giving. SJSUCenterOnEthics The SJSU Center on Ethics is committed to studying professional and applied ethics and the broader question of how we can do a better job sharing our world. In the past, we’ve hosted in-person talks and spearheaded a University-wide course in which student teams proposed initiatives to address our changing climate. More recently, we’ve supported SJSU’s Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl and Bioethics Bowl teams and hosted virtual public talks from experts on social media moderation, vaccine hesitancy, science journalism, immigration ethics, the ethical dimensions of being a scientist with a minoritized identity, and the moral worldviews presented by “prestige” television shows. There is so much more we want to do, like fostering ethics-focused research collaborations, both among SJSU faculty and students and between SJSU-affiliated researchers and researchers from other universities or organizations, and developing and disseminating resources like white papers or toolkits to support folks at SJSU and beyond in developing effective and meaningful ethics coursework and training. We can support ethics-focused research with small research grants or student scholarships, or even establish an “ethics residency” program to bring ethics-focused faculty and professionals from the private sector to SJSU to engage with the Center and the broader SJSU community. Your donation can help us cover the costs of our public-facing speaker series and research initiatives, as well as supporting student-faculty collaborations to engage a wider audience in vital questions about how we share a world with each other.

Help support the Rat Line Scholarship Endowment during this year's Day of Giving. Rat Line Scholarship Calling all Ratliners fans, friends and colleagues – Support the Patrick O’Daniels / Rat Line Scholarship Endowment today! Known as an independent SJSU publication from the 1960s to the early 2000s, the Rat Line was led by our SJSU alum and Ratliner, Patrick O’Daniels. After Pat’s passing in 2021, many of Pat’s friends, family and fellow Ratliners came together to establish the Patrick O’Daniels / Rat Line Scholarship Endowment for undergraduate students in the school of Journalism and Mass Communications. To say that Pat had many friends is an understatement. He was an avid historian, artist, and writer who shared his passion for people and their stories through the Rat Line. But most importantly, Pat was a friend you could count on. To date we have raised $66,000 of our $100,000 goal. But, we still need your support! With your support, the Patrick O’Daniels / Ratline Scholarship Endowment will provide scholarships to two journalism students each year. Make your gift today! Matching gifts and gifts of stocks are also welcomed. Do it for Pat. Do it for the future.

Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment
By SJSU's Opera Theater Program
Help support the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment during this year's Day of Giving.
Help support the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment during this year's Day of Giving. SJSU's Opera Theater Program San Jose State University’s Opera Theater Program is fun, engaging and ever so lively! From our double bill of La Curandera and Trial by Jury last year, students left audiences roaring with laughter as they heard the ¡¡Ayyyyy!! from la Curandera as it tried to cure Alba’s jealous heart. This one-act comic opera was a refreshing take on the same story as Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, where the sorcerer is replaced with a curandera, a Mexican folk healer and magician. From laughter to “Silence in Court!” Students also performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, a classic and hilarious one-act comic opera. Audiences laughed out loud at the antics on stage as ex-lovers Edwin and Angelina battle it out in a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit. Performances like La Curandera and Trial by Jury is why San Jose State University’s Opera Theater Program is here. Over the years, many of our alumni have gone on to perform worldwide and win prestigious awards. All have noted the influence and impact of Joseph Frank, a tenor and Professor Emeritus of voice in the Opera Theater Program. When Professor Frank retired in 2019, he proposed the creation of the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment as his legacy to the Opera Theater Program. It was the very first endowment to support the teaching and performance of opera at SJSU. Today, it provides support to the Opera Theater Program and scholarships to help train the next generation of opera performers. To date, we have raised over $100,000 for the Joseph Frank Opera Excellence Endowment. Help us meet our goal of $20,000 today to ensure a level of opera training and development that will be transformative for our students. We are already off to a great start with one lead gift of $10,000. Join us and make a gift today for our students. * The video was created and conceived by Don Nguyen and Richard Le.

Arts and Humanities Programming

Help support Arts and Humanities Programming during this year's Day of Giving.
Help support Arts and Humanities Programming during this year's Day of Giving. Co. of Humanities and the Arts Here at the College of Humanities and the Arts, we’re all about imaginative and thoughtful storytelling. We serve 4,200 majors and 26,000 undergraduates – all with stories to tell. Through initiatives such as the Deep Humanities and Arts; Borderlands and Pandemic Pandemonium, our students and faculty draw upon music, dance theater and the humanities to create stories that are responsive and provoking. Our stories have asked, “How do we integrate the humanities and arts into the rapidly evolving world of technology? Or how do we reconceptualize the idea of borders through music, dance, theatre?” Your support helps us to provide opportunities to our students and faculty to tell these stories. And there are many more stories to tell. With your support, we can tell each and every one. Make a gift today and be a part of the story at the College of Humanities and the Arts.
