The Share Your Spartan Heart Day of Giving brings together our entire San José State community to raise money for the College of Graduate Studies, as well as over 80 projects, departments, and programs. Help support the Grad Slam Fund during this year's Day of Giving. SJSU Graduate Studies What is Grad Slam? The SJSU Grad Slam, also known as a three-minute thesis competition, is an exciting and fast-paced event where graduate students present their research in 3 minutes and with one slide to a non-specialist audience. The students compete in front of a live audience and a panel of judges, and are scored on their ability to communicate their work and its impact effectively. This is not a research competition, it is a research communication competition. Why is it important? In addition to being an outstanding way to highlight SJSU’s faculty-mentored graduate student research, Grad Slam is a transformative professional development experience for graduate students. As participants in the SJSU Grad Slam, graduate students attend a series of workshops to develop their presentation skills. The extensive preparation that they do over the semester culminates in a live, on-stage presentation, so every participant has the experience of performing in the “limelight”. The two resulting skills: the ability to speak well in public and the ability to succinctly summarize one's work without jargon, are both great assets in nearly every career. Is Grad Slam just for scientists and engineers? Certainly not! SJSU encourages Grad Slam participation from graduate students engaged in research, scholarship, or creative activity in any discipline. For example, in the 2022 Grad Slam, our finalists included a poet, a music historian, an educational counselor, a public health student, two urban planners, a meteorologist, and three students in computer science or engineering disciplines. Do SJSU Grad Slam winners go on to other competitions? Yes. The first place winner of the SJSU Grad Slam is invited to represent SJSU at the Western Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition, and the winner of that regional event goes on to the national finals sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools. In addition, the top two winners of the SJSU Grad Slam are invited to participate in the California State University-wide competition in which representatives from the 23 CSU campuses compete for state bragging rights. How can I help with this amazing event? You can help by simply engaging. Whether you attend the event as an audience member, or participate as a judge, or help mentor a student, or encourage your company to sponsor a prize, your participation can make a big difference. And if you have the ability to help financially, a donation to our Grad Slam fund can help us keep the program going for years to come.

Please Support the Dr. Hector and Catalina Garcia Graduate Endowed Scholarship and the College of Graduate Studies
Please Support the Dr. Hector and Catalina Garcia Graduate Endowed Scholarship and the College of Graduate Studies Who are we? We are delighted that the College of Graduate Studies is able to help advance Hector and Catalina Garcia's vision to support SJSU graduate students who are committed to leadership, service, and activism for the benefit of the Hispanic community. With the Garcia's generous bequest, we will be launching the Dr. Hector and Catalina Garcia Graduate Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship will provide substantial financial support for 2 or 3 graduate students with financial need each year who demonstrate the commitment to the community envisioned by the Garcias. Why are we raising the money? We can tell you that the need is very great. We have many talented grad students who are seeking their credentials, master's degree, or doctorate and who are making a real difference for the Latinx community through their research and service. For some of these students, the Garcia scholarship will make the key difference in allowing them to finish their degrees. How can you help? In fact, the need is so great that we'd like to invite anyone who shares the Garcia's vision to contribute to the Dr. Hector and Catalina Garcia Graduate Endowed Scholarship fund. Your support can amplify the work that the Garcia's bequest has started and help support even more of these talented but under-resourced graduate students.

College of Graduate Studies Dean’s Fund
College of Graduate Studies Dean’s Fund
Help support the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) Dean’s Fund during this year's Day of Giving
Help support the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) Dean’s Fund during this year's Day of Giving College of Graduate Studies Who are we? The College of Graduate Studies (CGS) Dean’s Fund provides support for important activities related to graduate education at SJSU that are not supported in the college budget. This includes support for graduate students, staff, alumni, and faculty for activities that promote or advance graduate education. Why are we raising the money? An example is supporting travel for graduate students to present their research at a professional conference or travel to collect data for their research when CGS or their home department budget cannot meet this need. Another example is to help support events that promote graduate student success, such as networking events or other professional development activities. How can you help? A Dean’s discretionary fund can help bridge the gap between formal education in classrooms, laboratories, and studios and the informal but essential learning that occurs outside the classroom at conferences or at remote research sites. It can also support events designed to advance graduate education.
