The State of Latino Students at SJSU - Why Give?

Did you know that San Jose State University is a Hispanic Serving Institution serving over 26% Latinos of its plus 30,000 student population? The cost of attendance at SJSU is $29,058 which is 52% of a Latinx family’s annual income!  The high cost of a college education continues to rise and is a barrier for our SJSU Latinx students. In addition, Latino students face unique circumstances like family emergency situations, lack of feeling connected to campus and financial stress pushes students to work longer hours and spend less time being full time students. These circumstances extend the college experience for many, or for some are the reasons why students discontinue their education. With over 26% Latino student population, our students are the 2nd lowest retained student population. 

The Latino Alumni Network’s Solution - Support students with scholarships and community

Established in 2011, the SJSU Latino Alumni Network exists to provide financial support and retention for Latino students, and create a community for SJSU Latino alumni and students to promote professional and personal growth. 

In 2018, LAN awarded its first two scholarships and has supported 12 students in total. On an average, LAN receives over 100 applications each year from qualified applicants with financial need. LAN has a five year plan in place to raise $50,000 to establish an endowment while continuing to increase the number of scholarships it awards to students each year. An endowment will allow LAN to create a legacy for future generations of SJSU Latino students. Every dollar makes a difference!  

In the 2022-2023 school year, the SJSU Latino Alumni Network will award even more scholarships to deserving Latino Spartans and we need your help!

With your donation, LAN will be able to award up to six scholarships next year and save towards our goal of $50,000 to endow a scholarship in spring 2023. Help us support current and future generations of SJSU Latino students by making a donation today!
