Who are we?
In the SJSU College of Science, we use computational approaches to address a large array of global challenges, including understanding climate change, better addressing forest fires, addressing gerrymandering and understanding and preparing for earthquakes. Through hands-on partnerships between students and faculty, we use this broad array of computational approaches to gain critical insights into projects as diverse as understanding how small mammals called pika are impacted by climate change to discovering how to solve problems in quantum computing.
The College of Science is known for providing high-quality hands-on research experiences with these computational approaches to solve our most challenging problems, which set our students up to succeed in their careers. These are transformational opportunities that allow students to work at the frontiers of their fields, making critical contributions that impact our community.
Why are we raising money?
We are raising money to support students so that they can participate in these transformational research traineeships, regardless of their family’s financial status. This allows us to engage a more diverse group of students, including students from minoritized groups, first generation college students and women, who are frequently underrepresented in the sciences. Many of these students would otherwise need to sacrifice these career-building opportunities to take minimum-wage jobs to support themselves or their families. Even a small contribution can make a huge difference to a student, who could become a future scientific leader.
